Dear Mr. Chairman:
With reference to our telephone conversation this afternoon on
the subject of Diego Garcia and the Soviet presence in the Indian Ocean,
I am enclosing for your information a copy of a letter which I sent to
Chairman George H. Mahon attaching a number of press reports commenting
on my testimony. As I indicated in that letter, .1 feel that many of the press
reports do not reflect the real thrust of the briefing which I gave to Senator
Symington's Military Construction Subcommittee.
I am also enclosing a statement which I submitted to the House
Armed Services Committee on 9 August 1974 in response to their request
for our position on Soviet reaction to U. S. moves on Diego Garcia.
Finally, I am enclosing a statement which we prepared at Gordon Nease's
request for Senator Symington on 4 September 1974 on the Soviet military
presence in Somalia.
I understand Ed Braswell has given you a copy of the unsanitized
transcript of my testimony before the Military Construction Subcommittee.
I look forward to seeing you on Monday to discuss this subject in further
detail.
