Branch, Analysis Division, Cam, has been invited informally to give
a paper and participate in the discussions at the International
Conference on Productivity to be held at Lake Como, Italy during
the first ten days in September 1961. The conference, financed
largely by a Ford Foundation grant, in being held under the auspices
of the International Economic Association. The informal invitation

will receive a formal written invitation in the next few wee Ks.
2. Participation in the conference is by invitation only. It
is understood that there are to be ten representatives each from the
Us m, the 2astern European .satellites, various Western European coun-
tries, and the United Mates. The Bloc representatives probably will
be drawn almost entirely from the universities and research institutes.
Ong; the U.0. participants are Professors Walter Galenson of the
University of California, John Dunlop of Harvard, John Kendrick of
George Washington University, and Charles Myers of the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology.
3. For her participation in the Conference, has
been asked to prepare a paper that will analyze recent Soviet compari-
sons of labor productivity in the U.S. and USM and will present alter-
native comparisons made by western scholars. The paper will focus
Primarily on methodologies and can be prepared from unclassified sources.
It ie vj understanding that all papers given at the conference will be
published in the official Proceedings of the conference.
