THE OFFICE OF NAVAL INTELLIGENCE FURNISHED THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION TO CIA FOR IAC DISSEMINATION IN ACCORDANCE WITH PARAGRAPH 3 c OF NSCID #7. 50X1-HUM 2% In addition to the detailed set forth below, specific items of interest at the port of Archangel are indicated by alphabetical designators on overlay of BA Chart 2280 (Approaches to Archangel), coordinated with the following: 50X1-HUM 3. "A" indicates position harbor pilot boarded \ "B" indicates the point where the Soviet Control Commission boards or inspection. "C" indicates location of berth at Pt Ekonomiya, known as sawmill No 1, before being moved to "D," which is sawmill No 16. ."E" indicates-the location of naval 50X1-HUM facility where an estimated 20 to 30 vessels similar to US MTBs are moored.. '\ I /distance from Pt Ekonomiya ("C") to point "E" at one-quarter mile. "F" Indicates location of unknown number of Soviet naval vessels described' 50X1-HUM as smaller than, but resembling a DD, of about one thousand tons displacement, , Diesel-driven, resembling "old gun-boats." "G" indicates berthing area for merchant A.-- and passenger vessels of Russian registry. They wore pistols and carried a rifle or automatic weapon. 50X1 -HUM The depth of water in harbor is three to four fathoms. 7. \observedaSoviet naval vessel identified as the twin-hulled ASE or a sister-ship thereto. 8. 50X1 -HUM 50X1 -HUM noted about 20 sawmills spotted along the waterways leading into Archangel, each with its own slip. 9. No foreign vessels are belieVed to go into Archangel:proper, shipa -berthing at the gUmerous sawmills along the waterways.. These slips are up to one'thoUSand feet in tength, of old wooden construction and in fair material condition though some holes *ere noted closed cloaks were observed at any of these locations 10. No cranes were noted shoreside or floating. Loading is effected bY'assearkiling logs on the Blip from lighters,. and are then snaked aboard via wooden skids or runways using ship's gear. Dock workers, both male and female: work around the clock in 12-hour shifts, less one hour for meals. Females do not work on deck or in the holds. ; Males appeared old or ailing but had no difficulty' in operating ship's deck gear. 12.
