All box cars, both open and closed, were packed with straw when leaving this plant. The annotations are as follows: 1) Old city h 11 - which was main Soviet headquarters. 2) New city hall - construction not quite completed in 1944. 3) NKVD headquarters 4) Main city jail ? 5) Workers' apartments - ten floors high; two rooms allotted to a family of five. 6) Makeyevka Metal Works - This was one of the largest plants in the USSR. It produced steel, iron, galvanized tin plate, cast iron pipe, steel pipe, stamping presses, steel forgings, nd cannon barrels. The plant also produced other war materials; but the entire labor force, specialists and machinery used on these materials were evacuated before the Germans arrived so that I could not determine wh t projects they were working on. This plant had about eight large blast furnaces all in a row, and two or three smaller ones a;read through the area. It had about eight open hearth furnaces and three or four Bessemer converters. Although the main power source was the power plants in Zuyevka and Shterovka, the metal works had a thermal power station of its own. This was located near the center of the entire installation and was about one-fourth the size of the Zuyevka installation. The Makeyevka Metal Works had between 55,000-and 80,000 employees. It was surrounded by a 15 stonewall on the city side, and a wire fence on the other side. It had several guard towers on the fence side. TWo large gas storage tanks in the metal works were visible from a distance of 40 miles. 5.All factories engaged in war production were surrounded by fences or walls. Special security police gu rded the entrahces and strategic spots around the - fences or walls. They had orders to shoot anyone who touclied the fences or walls. There were several instances where drunks returning home at night, who accident lly leaned or fell against the fences, were shot without hesitation. Most of the war factories h d tunnel entrances where railroad cars were loaded and unloaded so that persona not actually engaged in the loading operations would not know what was going out or coming in. Even in peace time the Soviets tried to hide the. identity of shipments from important plants. Laborers were instructed to keep still about the tasks they performed, and consequently were afraid to talk. - end. - Enclosure (A): Stalin() Map Overlay. Enclosure (B): Stalino Map Overlay.
