SU RY AND RECONAMMATION FOR TIE COf+MTTEE
12 December 1957
SUGGESTION NO5; 58-103: dated 17 July 1957
GP $3.42 p.h. (ts-11),
Printing Service Division, Office of Logistics,
DD/S
A. Summary of Suggestion
A convenient way to arrest the rusting of equipment within
various printing establishments is to spray the metal parts with
an anti corrosion agent. Liquid wax in pressurized pint-size cans
provides an easy and economical way to preserve highly polished
surfaces on cameras and other equipment. Cabinet Maker?s Wax,
procured from Port Jervis Flying Service, 693 Broad Street, Stafford,
Connecticut, was applied to some equipment in the Administration
Building Plant. The cost was $ .50 per can. This wax does not
come off on.your hands, eliminating possibly ruining negatives or
other materials. This wax will last ' several months. When?equip-
ment rusts, many man hours are required to remove the rust. There-
fore, a nominal coat will eliminate this problem.
Summary of Evaluation
On 12 September 1957 the Office of logistics stated:
"The suggestion that a wax spray be used on exposed
metal parts to prevent corrosion has been adopted by the
Printing Services Division. All equipment which is subject
to rust through exposure to dampness wili be sprayed with
the recommended material.
"It is difficult, if not impossible, to estimate the
tangible savings which may result from this suggestion. It
is therefore suggested that a nominal award be made on the
basis of slight intangible benefits."
On 1. October 1957 TSS/GARD stated :
"Way. has been used on the various printing equipment ea-
peelally paper cutters and items with flat surfaces for a
number of years by TSS, and found to be very satisfactory.
This recommended use of this spray, however, is limited to
areas and equipment which is not affected by solvents such
an type wash or areas where oils will splash.

Sugg. No. 58-103 Contd.
"In addition to the wax spray it has been found that
Krylon and other types of plastic sprays are very good where
wax is hard to get at."
On 21 October 1957 TSS/PD stated:
"Ile do not recommend the use of spray wax around photo-
graphic equipment, however, the suggestion states specifically
"PRINTING ESTABLISTU4ENTS" and does not evidently include
"PHOTOGRAPHIC DARKROOM". We have wiped on oil, wax and
various comaercial compounds for some ttme now."
On 18 November 1957 the Machine Division, OCR stated:
"This suggestion is for printing establishments. The
spraying of photographic equipment with wax or Krylon would
not be recommended. We have experimented with sprays in and
on the processors with no success."
