SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE CHAIRMAN
8 April 1958
STATINTL SUGGESTION NO. 58-167; dated 21 October 1957
GS-9, Librarian
Engineering Division, OC9 DD/S
A. Summary of Suggestion
Suggester compiled a supplement to the "Index of Bureau
of Ships Publications" for use of various CIA libraries.
B. Summary of Evaluations
on 26 November 1957, CIA Librarian, stated: STATINTL
"The CIA Library has very few requirements on Navy, Bureau
of Ships for its publications. The index submitted by the
suggestor would be of limited use therefore to the Library
in its procurement of such Navy publications. It is sug-
gested that Liaison Division, OCR, also comment on the
value of such an index to it for purposes of this type of
procurement.
"From the professional point of view, the index is an
alpha-numeric one which has been compiled with great care.
It is a finding device, when the model number is known,
to the appropriate Bureau of Ships publication. There is
no subject index, but this is probably not necessary. We
believe the use of this index will be limited."
On 2 December 1957, Chief, Liaison Division, OCR, STATINTL
stated:
"The Liaison Division is a channel for the procurement of
Navy publications in response to requests from the various
components of the Agency.
"In connection with the procurement of Navy Publications
(Bureau of Ships and other Bureaus), this Division must
have proper identification of items desired. The ideal
requests should contain both the originator's number (Navy
Bureau number) and title of publication; however, these
publications may normally be procured by using either the
Bureau numbers or the titles and/or the model nomenclature.
Bureau of Ships maintains a cross-reference card file and
the NAVSHIP number may be obtained by calling the Publi-
cations Branch, Bureau of Ships, Extension 62784 and

providing that office with the model nomenclature. Bureau
of Ships has not published an index to its publications
since October 1955 because of budget and other limitations.
"In view of the above, we believe the index submitted by
the suggester would be of limited use."
