The following is a summary of information on Soviet and East German military
activities received prior to 28 November 1955:
1. Soviet Activities
Troops remained mostly within garrison areas, where recruitl, training
continued. Under the annual troop rotation program, more thin 100,000
men had been involved in each direction. Between 14 and 23 November the
special equipment was removed from four shuttle trains and the trains
subsequently broken up. On 6 November, according to unconfirmed information,
a 240-mm. mortar was seen with the 65th Mortar Brigade in Rathenow.
2. Soviet Movements
a. During the period 16 - 30 November more than 2,000 empty two-axle
flatcars allegedly are to be moved from East Germany to Brest Litovsk
where they are to be loaded with motor vehicles for shipment to East
Germany. It is not known whether they will be consigned to the Soviet
Army or the KVP. During the period 17 - 19 November eight trains, each
with 50 empty flats, reportedly left East Germany under this program.
On 21 23 November two more trains were turned over to Soviet
authorities daily, Thus some 700 empties had possibly already been;
sent or earmarked by 23 November. No return movement has been reported
so far.
b. On 9 November a'shipment including 12 rocket launchers moved from
Brest Litovsk to Frankfurt/Oder.
c. On 11 November an AAA unit moved from Frankfurt/Oder to Wustrow for
firing practice.
d. The tanks unloaded in Doeberitz on 6 November have been confirmed as one
shipment from Neuruppin with 16 T-341s and one shipment from Neustrelitz
with 14 JS-2's.1
