1. The crystal laboratory at VEB Carl Zeiss. Jena has succeeded in drawing a
germanium monocrystal through fusion (aus der Schmelze) This was accomplished
in close coordination with the Heinrich. Hertz Institute for_Oicillatirn.Besearch
and the VEB Elektrochemisches Kombinat Bitterfeld, which produce germanium and
germanium silicon, Bitterfeld also produces. monocrystals. Zeiss is to begin
the production of germanium silicon monocrystals this year.
2. The South Works (8uedwerk) of VEB Carl Zeiss Jena manufactures photogrammetric
apparatus (Bildmessgeraete); 200 stereoplanigraphs .(Ste oplanigraphen), 200
stereocomparators, and 200 stereoautogxmphs (atereoautographen) were to be
manufactured during a two year period for export to other Soviet-Bloc nations
where there is a great demand for these items.,-However, only _ those items ? for
which orders had been received have been produced. Furthermore, the customer
countries are complaining that the equipment is.obsolete and they have begun to
reject part of their orders. Eleven subcontractors for .this planned .production
are included .in this program,. The equipment was based on the latest pre-war
models; new construction is now to b6`-developed. Technical photogrammetric
designers and development engineers, and even the best draftswomen, have fled
to the 'West..
The Zeiss. computing machine OPFBE (Optisoohe Rechenmaschine) is called an
"optical" computer because it is used for calculations of optical work, not
because it utilizes optical principles in its operation. It is a digital calms
culator with relays, large in size, and relatively slow in operation,1
