Elements of the u/i R1 Regiment of the First Gde Yecz Army, which had been transferred to Jueterbog 2 Jull- C955 in 2 shirments. had apparently not returned to Meissen by 12 August. PAGES 2 ENCLOSURES (NO. & TYPE) REMARKS 25X1 1 September 1955 I 25X1 1. Between 8 and 12 August 1955, approximately 6C % of the Zaschendorf Kaserne (1601) in Meissen was occupied by approximately 600-800 soldiers wearing red-bordered black epaulets with artillery insignia. At least 12 x M-13 rocket launchers were seen, partly in the sheds in the north section of the ba~ss installation, partly at the Bohnitzseh firing range.l 2. The southern part of the installation, which was occupied by a signal unit, was quiet. The storage place looked untidy; the piles of masts had been removed almost entirely. During the period under review a telephone line .e laid between the Zaschendorf laserne and the switching central in the Niedgrauerstrasse. The work was carried out by 1 officer and approximately 15 eoldiers wearing blue-bordered black epaulets with signal insignia.2 3. The occupation of the Bohnitzech Kaserne (1602) in Meissen varied considerably between 8 and 12 August. In the north section of the installation approximately 20 % of the windows were lit on one day, on another approximately 500, and on two days there was no light whatsoever. Everything was quiet; no activity was observed.3 In the southern section of the installation, especially in the headquarters building, between 30% and 80% of the windows were lit. A number of masts which-had been set up around a truck in the south and of the installation had been removed.4 A truck 25X1 las observed moving from Zaschendorf in the direction of 25X1 1. n . According to available information, on 27 July approximately 00 telephone poles were still seen in the storage place. Presumably they have been used up for enlarging the signal lommunications in the meantime. CLASSIFICATION East Germany PLACE OBTAINED 25X1 25X1 25X1 Comment. After early May,, only rear details of the 45th Gds Tank Regt 25X1 of the 11th Gds Tank Div.werg seen in the installation.
