In thewinter of 1953/54, Soviet local administrative' agencies resolved to'
have the Bobruisk -- Rogachev - Roslavl highway straightened near Rogachev.
This highway forms part of the Moscow - Brest Litovsk - Warsaw - Berlin
route. It is to be brought to a width of 35 meters and provided with an
asphalt surface. Near Rogachev the highway was rerouted so as to run
straight in`an east-west direction through the boggy terrain east of the
Dnepr River. In connection with this highway construction project, the
.building of'three bridges, namely one over the Drut River, which is 50'
meters wide, and one each over the Dnepr River and the Old Dnepr River,
which is 80 and 100 to 120 meters wide respectively, has become necessary.
Preparations for the setting'up of construction sites were under way im
March 1955. By late May 1955, about 1,000 workers were to be hired for the
project. Work'was scheduled to be started on 1 June 1955 and completed by 31
December 1955. The three bridges mentioned were almo scheduled to be
completed by that date.
