In celebration of Soviet Navy Day, on 25 July; Alany naval vessels were concentrated in Tallinn Roads; the vessels were illuminated at night, but the public had no access to them. The public celebrations took place in Kadriorg, a large park on the outskirts of Tallinn. 2. During the last week of September 195+ five large cruisers in Tallinn Roads, and two cruisers and approximately ten de~trp3rers at the test Quay in Tallinn harbor. the vessels came and went either earl in the morning or late at night. a most modern warships were of the SVERDLOV type. There are no permanent submarines or torpedo boats based in Tallinn. Submarines and torpedo boats waiting for, or perhaps undergoing, repairs usually lie in the ex-Riigi Sadama Tehaste Canals, ex-State Harbor Works (see sketch on page 2 ). ~+. No landing craft have been observed in Tallinn, except two old German ones which were left after the war. One of these has now been repaired and is maintaining a ferry service between KtiiV~.~1r'e (N 58-35, E 23-80) and Vif~su (N 58-35, E 23-32). and Paldiski, and that larger vessels are taken to Kaliningrad (sic). 6. Floating drydocks are not being built in Tallinn, but occasionally they do arrive from East German and Polish ports, and are sent from Tallinn to other Soviet ports, pres~e-bly Leningrad and Kronshtadt. Only one small floating dock is permanently based in Tallinn, at the former Sadaas Tehaste. The Vine-Balti Shipyard has a floating dock which cane Eton Gdynia.l The type of production at these yards is not known. Several thousand workers are employed there. 8. As a rule, very fex soldiers are to be seen in Tallinn, .whereas naval personnel are very much in evidence. g. Students of navigation schools, when they are called into service, are taken into the Navy and trained to becoiae nidshipnen. It is not known xhether any Soviet naval officers serve on Soviet merchant ships for practical trbining. to ~~sit Tallinn hisrbor, provided they have a valid reason, such as a relative working there. To gain admittance, the visitor must show his passport and 'bb~ain an entrance ticket, which is valid for one visit.
