In October 1954 the Development Department of Carl Zeiss, Jena, was completely reorganized. Prior to this change the Department had consisted of eight Development Offices each employing app--xi tely 200 workers. The new plan called for six Development Departments (see Attachment A) with approximately three Development Offices wader each. This revision reduced the number of workers in each Development Office to approximately 50 and created several new supervisory positions which were given to former Zeiss employees who had returned from the tTBSR. This action produced hard feelings among those who had remained in the DDR and who had taken part in the reconstruction of the plant after the Soviets had dismantled it. 2. Development Department No. 1 had beef working since 1948 on a 2-aster mirror telescope for installation the Observatory in Babelsberg near Potsdam. The mechanical drive me had been completed and the telescope was scheduled to go into operation in 1956. Zeiss had previously constructed a 1.28-aster mirror for Hamburg. In addition, the following development projects were wader Development Department No. 1.t a. A 3-meter multiple-use optical measuring instrument, which could be used for length measurements, oemparison measuremments and similar applications, had been completed in Development Office No. 1. This instrument will be exhibited at-the Leipzig Fair in the spring of 1955. b. The A-1 pilot training device was being improved in Development Office No. 3. 3. Either Development Department No. 2 or No. 3 was concerned with the development of electron mierosoopes. A large digital relay computer for the computation of elaborate optical systems was under development in Development Department No, 5. This computer was scheduled for completion in December 1954 but considerable work remained to be done in November 1954. The completion of the project by the scheduled date was unlikely. This project was pushed by Dr. Kortum (fnu), the director of the Main Development Department. In October or November 1954, the rack for the computer was erected in the main building at Jena and the various plug-in units were being worked on in adjoining rooms. When completed the computer will use 10,000 relays in addition to a number of electron tubes. The rack was shaped as shown in Attaabment B. Ing. Lenski (fnu), Max Hommal and approzi ately five other workers were associated with this project.
