1. VEB Carl Zeiss Jena is subdivided into the following four main
areas of responsibility:
a. The KHL, or Kommerzielle Hauptleitungw i.e. Commerc.al Main
administration.

2. The chief of the NVEL is 'P'rofessor Paul Goerlich (SED), the famous
specialist in infrared problems,, who was with Zeiss-T,:.-:n, Dresden,
before World War II. From 1946 to 1952, ,rofessor Goerlich was a
contract specialist in the USSR and on his return to East Germany
was periodically field of
pat the Jena and Dresden universities on his 25X1
specialization.
3. Professor Goerlich's secretary is Hilliger (fnu).
4. The WHL is divided into three WLs, or scientific departments, headed

f. MiLab/A is the abbreviation for Microlaboratory (inorganic?.

deals mainly with research concerning reflex-reducin surface

J. Med.ab is the abbre-iation for the Medical Laboratory, which
does research in medical-optical instruments such as cysto-
scopes and operatin room lights, etc, It in by Dr.
Franke (fnu).
k. SgLab is the abbreviation for Schwingungs Laboratorium, which
speatalizes in oscillation and ultrasonic research problems.
It has an extremely capable staff headed by Professor Schuster
and Dr. Trommler (both fnu)

the electrical parts of photocells used for various optical
instruments and devices, including movie projectors and the

with research connected with .1. types of photo-colls. It is
headed by Dr. Krohs (fnu), who is a very capable man in his

6. There are two more laboratories at VEB Carl Zeiss Jena, but their
plant designations are not known. The first one generally does
research in connection with optical measuring devices for internari
plant and production use. It is headed by Dr. Konrad Kuehne, who
is also a returnee from the USSR. The second one is a laboratory
whose specific functions are not known. It may be engaged in some
secret work. Dr. Lapp and Dr. Schreiner (both fnu) are on the staff;

1955-

3 Kurt Polack, formerly with Zeiss' Jena, was

Dortmund.
