DATE ACQUIRED Research and Development Institute, Schloss Sonnenstein, Pirna 15 April 19525X1 1. Control of the Forschungs and Entwicklungsanstalt (FEA) a. The FEA (Research and Development Institute) in Schloss Sonnenstein, Pirna, in no longer subordinate solely to the "Hauptstab" (main staff) of the KVP. The institute now comes under the special State Secretariat which is responsible directly to the Minister President. b. The following functionaries have been entrusted with the day to day operation of the FEA: (1) Chief of Security (KVP and SSD). (2) Chief of the Scientific Section. (3) Chief of Technical Section. (I+) Chief of Political and Cultural Section. c. Since 1 January 1955, the KVP and the SSD have been jointly responsible for the ;Security of the FEA. 2. Program of Work a. The current assignmentsof the FEA are: (1) Rocket development. (2) Jet engine development. (3) Development of instruments for checking, searching for, and measuring radioactivity (Geiger counters). There is also a section engaged in special work, the nature of which has not yet been divulged. According to gossip, it is chemical experimental work. c. The FEA is not permitted to do direct atomic research. 3. Experimental Work a. Specially selected KVP personnel are to participate in outdoor scientific experiments. b. New mines, mine detecting apparatus, and explosives are to be tested. c. The dates for the experiments are not yet known, but they are to be held in the rocky and wooded areas around Pirna, in dry weather, regardless of whether it is hot or cold. 4. Number of Personnel a. The figures given below apply only to the FEA and not to the personnel of other institutions located at Schloss Sonnenstein. b. It is estimated that there are approximately: (1) 32 scientists including assistants. (2) 22 designers. (3) 25 technicians. c. The figures given for designers and technicians apply only to key men. General technical and miscellaneous staff members, including drivers, boilermen, etc., are not included. d. The total number of personnel employed in the FICA is estimated to be 250. 5. Reorganization under Consideration a. A major reorganization has been under oonaideration sinoa-1:.January 1955, but a final decision is not expected until 15 January. b. This reorganization is necessary because of the need for enlarging all existing establishments at Schloss Sonnenstein. c. The intention is to move the designing and technical sections and leave only the scientific section and a small part of the technical staff behind.
