?. Comment. Ammunition shipments from the USSR to Soviet
ammunition dumps in the GDR. East-west ammunition shipments have
The shipment
mentioned in paragraph 3 is believed to be identical with the
shipment to Magdeburg-Buckau mentioned in paragraph 2.
(Comment. This information on the dispatch of such a large
number of empty railroad tankcars to Brest Litovsk requires confirmation.
If it is correct, this operation may have the following purposes:
a. The tankcars will be used for the shipment of major quantities
of fuel from the USSR to the GDR. In one run, the cars could
carry 15,000 to 20,000 tons of gasoline. The number of tankcars
mentioned represents about one third of all tankcars suitable
for the shipment of gasoline available in the GDR.
b. The fuel shipped to the GDR will probably not be used for army
units because the quantity involved is too large. idloreover
additional army fuel requirements could be met b~ GDR gasoline
plants. On the other hand, the 24th Air Army has so far been
inadequately supplied with jet fuel by German gasoline plants.
A monthly total of 10,000 tons of jet fuel is scheduled to be
produced in East Germany. According to unconfirmed information,
the production of jet fuel by GDR synthetic gasoline plants
is scheduled to be decreased. The fuel shipments from the
USJ h li,i, ht, therefore, be used to cover the fuel needs of
bosiber units planned to be moved to Germany. In this connection
it may be stated that two bomber divisions had been stationed
i.. the GDR prior to 19P3 while only one bomber division is at
present in East Germany. A third possibility is that the new
fuel may also be needed by ground attack units after their
possiole re-equipment with jet aircraft. In any event, fuel
shipments which regL._ire the use of 1,040 tankcars would be of
an unusual nature.
Phe transports directed to Rathenow and Sperenberg may have been
motor vehicles shipments; those for `Jelten and Satzkorn may have
carried food or other equipment.
