1. The USSR produces over 10.,000 kg of artificial quartz per year for optical pur-
poses as well as artificial rock crystal. Theoretically this is equivalent to
natural rock crystal and is used by the Soviets in those factories which are
equipped with machinery dismantled from Zeiss Jena Ln 1946 and which are models
from the years 1941-45.
2. Zeiss Tena is however, wrll aware that artificial quartz cannot compete with
natura..L quartz and have refused supplies of artificial quartz from the USSR
which can be easily recognized since it is slightly more yellow than natural
quartz. 25X1
3. In November 1954, the Zeiss Terra works was informed by the Soviet Commercial
.Office in Berlin that the Ub R would not supply it with any further deliveries
of rock crystal newly imported as this was urgently required for
internal use. So far as the management of Zeiss Jena is aware, the Soviets
require large quantities of quartz for optical purposes in connection with
their aircraft industry. . 25X1
4. A Berman businessman, who has dealings with DIA-Opts ha been commissioned to
supply Zeiss Jena with quartz from Western countries
