On 16 July 1954, workers in the Baku oil fields staged a strike because of
dissatisfaction with their living conditions. In the ensuing police inter-
vention, approximately 20 strikers were killed and a large number arrested,
of which approximately 300 were later exiled from Baku to other areas in the
USSR. The majority of the strikers were Turks, and among those arrested were
many women and children. The women and children had not taken part in the
strike but were taken from their homes for questioning.
