(FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) The Naycho Kirov Electrical Materials Factory 1. The Naycho Kirov Factory is a small factory, formerly privately owned, which produces electric materials. After nationalization it was greatly enlarged by the addition of new buildings and with the installation of new machinery. In summer 1953 it began producing "to total capacity." At present there are not less than 1,000 workers. 2. The enlargement of the plant and the new machinery was made by the Bulgarian government, with the financial assistance of the Soviets. electric materials o unspecified types. The Rug Industry in Bulgaria 4. The rug industry in Bulgaria has been greatly increased. The country pro- duces two types of rugs--Perisan, and "national." The Persian type are the knotted variety and are made in three types (I. II, and III'). There are various factories in Bulgaria which produce Persian- type rugs; these were formerly privately owned and have since been national- ized. The best-known, ones are located at Panagyurishte (which produces the best of the rugs, exclusively of I quality), Dobrich, Shumen, and Sofia. These last three areas produce mostly II and III quality rugs. Prices on the Bulgarian market are as followss a. I quality, 1,000 leva per square meter; SECRET/CONTROL - U. S. S. OFFICIALS ONLY b. II quality;, 800 leva per square meter; and c. III quality, 600 leva per square meter. 6. The "National" rugs are woven rather than knotted. They are mainly of the Pirot (Pirotski Kilim; Pirot Carpet) and Kotel (Kotlenski kilim) types. Most of the Pirots are made in Chiprovtsi (N L3-23, E 22-53), and most of the Kotels are made at Kotel (N 42-53, E 26-27) and Sofia. The Kotels are heavier and are made with more expensive textiles. Prices in Bulgaria are as follows t 7. a. Pirots, 206 leva per square meter; and b. Kotels, 400 leva per square meter. The Pirot and Kotel ris are sold only inside Bulgaria. Large quantities of the Persian rugs, however, are sent to the USSR. Prices for export are 50 percent less than for domestic markets. SECRET/CONTROL - U. S.
