In June 1951,'an order of the-day of the National Ministry of Defense the Trudoyak Service and the Trudovak units were to be placed under the commandC"' of the Ministry of National Defense, as units of the Regular A'my', and that the Trudovak soldiers were obliged-,-,as of that date, to salute all officers. '(Prior to this time they only had to salute Trudovak officers;.) 2. The Trudovak units were-given the recognized names of the Regular Army units: divisions, brigades, battalions, companies, and platoons. Trudovak divisions are based in Stara Zagora ar>?d in Sofia. Trudovak brigades have been identi- fied in the following localities: a. The 1 Brigade, in-Sofia; b. The 2 Brigade, in Plovdiv; c. The 3 Brigades in'Burgas; this brigade was originally in Sliven, then in Karnobat know Ployanovgrad), and since August 1952 in Burgas; d. The 4 Brigade, in Shumen (now Kolarovgrad); e. The 5 'Brigades in T1rnovo; f. The 6 Brigade, in Gorna Dzhumaya (now Blagoevgxad); and g. The 7 Brigade, in Stara Zagora. 3? Since 1951, the Trudovaks have exclusively taken care of military works. The Burgas Brigade is constructing fortifications in the vicinity of the Turkish border. A battalion subordinate of this brigade is stationed in Elkhovo and another one is in the village of Stefan Karadzhovo (N 42-13, E 26-49). SECRET/CONTROL - U. S. S. OFFICIALS ONLY 4. The Stara Zagora Brigade is working chiefly on the construction of an airfield at Ravnets (N 112-31, E 27-15), Burgas Okoliya. This airfield is being constructed for use by jet aircraft. This same brigade is also constructing another airfield at Uzundzhovo (N 41-58, E 25-39), Khaskovo Okoliya. Airplanes to be used in the defense of the industrial center of Dimitrovgrad are to be based at the Uzun- dzhovo airfield.. 5e The Plovdiv Brigade is chiefly employed in fortification work on the Greek frontier. Battalions subordinate to this brigade are located in Knrdzhali and in the village of Ustrem'(N 142-02, E 26-26), Topolovgrad District. In September 1952, within this brigade a detachment was formed for the construc- tion of military barracks in Plovdiv. 6. The Gorna Dzhumaya Brigade is working on fortifications on the Yugoslav frontier. 7. A Trudovak battalion is located in the village of Shabla.(N 43-31, E 28-33), Balchik Okoliya, and is working on fortifications on the Black Sea coast.. 8. It is estimated that the Trudovaks include a total of 70,000 to 80,000 men. SECRET/CONTROL - U. S.
