1. In mid-August 1953 hospital or ambulance train rolling stock
totalling about 80 cars on sidings at Diana Bad railway station on the southeast
outskirts of Sofia. The sketch on page 2 shows the location of this stock.
2.
Details
On each of four pairs of rails, there were between 15 and 25 cars and coaches; of
thesOithere was a total of at least eight tank cars. Of the balance, the majority
were converted wooden L.-wheel and 8-wheel (Bogie) closed goods trucks, mostly with
built-in windows, plus a few converted steel passenger coaches. One car was re-
frigerated, painted white) and narked "Khladilen Vagon" in the sans way as all
Bulgarian refrigerated railroad trucks. All other rolling stock was painted dark
green and bore on either side a red cross on a white disc about 18 inches in dia.
meter. All trucks were in Rood condition 50X1-HUM'
3. One of the four sets of trucks had the appearance of a complete hospital or am-
bulance train. It consisted of about 18 assorted cars and coaches, headed by a
locomotive (No. 19.01) with the sane red cross markings as the cars. Directly
behind the locomotive (which was not under steam) were two tank cars followed by
the rolling stock mentioned above. The rolling stock were inter-communicating,
with "concertina" attachments.
4. It is considered probable that the rolling stock in question is permanently loca-
ted at the site described. One armed soldier was observed patrolling the sidings.
5. A small fuel dump is located immediately southeast of the level crossing where
the road from Sofia to Simeonovo crosses the loop line leading through Diana Bad
station, and immediately adjacent to the station area.
