The Naval Bass of Sveti Ivan
E 27. and there is now a quay approximately 80 meters long for facili-
tating the discharge of materiel. Before the Soviets took over,, there were
eight 150 me guns and four 75 mm. guns for the defense of the island. It Ls

Coastal Artillery Installations
. Over the concrete base is a concrete platform, also square (two meters per
side) $ about 50 to 60 centimeters highs on which the gun is fixed by means
of 12 screw bolts$

chosen from among the best of various units of military workers; a new unit
called a as construction; unit with headquarters at
Varna$-has been established,, and is subordinate to the Coastal Defense

h. The littoral of the Black Sea for a depth of 15 kilometers has been declared
a military zone; to move about in this area (behind the populated zones).,
special permission from the military authorities is necessary.

Bulgarian Naval Schools m Early 1953
ANaval School is located in the northern part of the city of Varna. It consists
of.a--pri.noipal 3-story building., several smaller buildings., weapons depots.,
quartermaster service,, and guard post. It is protected by sentries from the out-
side. The course in this school is six years for pro-gymnasium graduates and three
years for gymnasium graduates. It now has an enrollment of 200 students., but is
able to accommodate more.

The sketch on page 4 ohms the following installations in the area south of Burgas
A. New breakwater approximately 100 meters long.
B. East breakwater. Near the beacon are two radars and a television apparatus.
C. South breakwater.
D. West breakwater transformed into a quay for light ships.
E. Militia post. Four or five men armed with a machine gam.
F. Border Guard zastava.
G. Position of a battery near the Q'Kafka farm.00
H. Border Guard zastava. Sailors and guards,
I. Position of a battery.
J. Lighthouse and command post of the electric mine-control system.
K. Line of mines barring the entrance to the port., on a line approximately
Chengene Skelya - SarafovU,. The explosion of these mines is controlled electri-
cally from the post at Sveti Anastas lighthouse.
NOTES-. (1) A mine field has been mentioned as located at the entrance of the Gulf
of Burgas (F.). Other information indicates mines in the gulf of Chengene Skelya.
(2) The bridge over Mandren Lake is the only means of land communication of Burgas

should be destroyed in case of war., the Bulgarian authorities have planned the
oonstrr otion'of a second bridge (shown L u the sketch on page 7). (3) Mines are
Ivcated- at 20' meter intervals along the-breakwaters A.9 B., and C., except that there
are no mines within 50 meters of tie beacons.

8. The-sketch on page 7 shows the following installations in the area southwest of

8. Antiaircraft artillery position. Twelve 75 nm. guns and a detachment of
five or six light tanks. Total of 30 men., forming the guard.

12. and 13. Barracks and artillery emplacements. Eight antiaircraft guns and six
coastal gas in casemates.

17. Workshop for filling cartridges., bombs., mines., and torpedoes. Four or five
mountain artillery pieces are around the workshop.

23. Petroleum wells which the Soviets started exploiting in January 1952. In
September 1952; the production was 10 tank trucks per day. The oil is loaded
on two Soviet ships immediately for transport to the USSR or to Rumania.

26. Barracks varnnder construction. Started in 1951. Three thousand cubic meters
of stone were brought in from the Gorno Ezerovo quarry. In autumn 19529 four
buildings were two stories high; a third story will probably be added. Be-
cause of the size of the area reserved for the barracks, it is believed that
several othbf-buildings will be added (similar size,., 50 by 15 meters).
