1: The construction site of the Earl Marx State Soda Works which is frequently
referred to in the Bulgarian press as being located vaguely "near Provadiya
(N 43-11, E 27-26) or "near Lake Devnya" is situated at XJ-8904 (MS H-506 ?
1:250,000 series, N 43-12, E 27-38), about two miles east of Reka-Devnya railroad
Statien (N. 43-13,?B 27-36) on the Varna-Dobrich single-gauge line, and about
one and one-half miles south of the road leading due west from Varna to Provadiya.
?
a. At the-end of July 1953, some of the smaller factory buildings had been completed,
bUt-fidik- lin-ithe-Main building- had not progressed very far. New steel pylons,
presumably intended later to carry electric cables, were being erected along a
line running northwest from the building site, approximately in the direction of
Vetrino (N 43-19, E, 2726).
Comment: Inasmuch as the report above located the new soda factory50X1-HUM
on the APS map and according to roads and railroads as aligned on that map, the
tacItorylis4.1ubtiproperly located according to its actual situation, because the
AFt map is very much in error in this section of Bulgaria. It is probabley from
the report above and corrections made according to the Deutsche Heereskarte
1:100j000 series, that the factory is actually located slightly east of Reka-
Deviiya-which is aboUt two miles east of Devnya village (N 43-14 E 27-33) which
appears on theAMS map. Furthermore, the factory is probably located north,
rather than south, of the Varna-Provadiya road. These itokreutions also locate
the factory in the vicinity of the. Devnya springs which renorte will feed the
plant.
