The company salvaged a total of 121 vessels Approximately 430 vessels with a total tonnage . of 150,000 had been sunk at the time the Communists consolidated their control; Of th?, vessels representing a total tonnage of 30,000 were repaired. Nineteen jetties in various Yangtze harbors have been repaired and more than 250 motor vessels) excluding those for military use, have been built. Dredging of Paishachou (4101/3097/3166) cleared the main navigation route and restricted the current to a central course, permitting completion of the wharf construction. dredging was completed in many areas near Shanghai50X1-HUM, Hsakou (N 34-43, E 119-22), Tsingtao, and along the lower Yangtze River. In the Sungari River, twenty shoals were removed and 1,500,000 cubic meters of silt dredged) permitting fully-loaded vessels to transport commodities between Communist China and the Soviet Union. Nine hundred and twenty-seven signs were erected along the shore and 190 buoys were placed within the harbor. At the mouth of the Yangtze River) obstructions along the navigation route were surveyed) mines wept, and buoys installed. Twenty lighthouses were either constructed or repaired and 32 buoys placed on navigation routes at the mouths of coastal harbors. On the Yangtze River a total of 305 lightboats, lighted posts, and lighted buoys were installed. A new navigation route was opened from the mouth of the Pearl River, enabling ocean liners to sail directly to Whampoa harbor without passing through the territorial waters of Hong Kong. 50X1-HUM 6. Surveying of harbors at Wuhu (N 31-21, E 118-23), Ytich'i(N 28-22) E 119-40), and Erhpa (0059/1100) was in progress. Surveying of 730 kilometers of navigation route on the Yellow River from Ninghsia to Suiyuan was completed and sounding and planning of a wharf and shipyard had begun on this route.
