Pazardzhik) I with 40,000 inhabitants has one hospital and one clinic, with a total of 60 physicians. The doctors spend three hours a day at the hospital and another three hours visiting patients at their homes and giving treatment at the clinic. Each physician works in a certain district and must make a routine check of all its inhabitants once a month. Every citizen knows to which doctor he is assigned, but in emergencies he is allowed to apply to any other physician. 2. The hospital at Pazardzhik, with 400 beds, includes the following sections: Internal, surgery, tuberculosis, pediatrics, ear, nose and throat, ophthalmic, physiotherapy, contagious diseases, gynecology, and obstetrics. 3t In addition to the hospital and the clinic there is a preventive Medicine station at Pazardzhik which deals with hygiene and the prevention of oontagious dieeaeee. It has a_ staff of 20 phylaioians, including a bacteriologist, epidemologict, and specialists for industrial hygiene public hygiene, foodetuffe, schools, malaria, eto. During an epidemic this station is assisted by all the physicians in the town. 4. Clinics in shall towns are also available to the inhabitants of the neighboring villages, Residents of the town itself are assigned numbers by the secretariat of the dispensary, which they use when they go to the physician to receive treatment. Inhabitants of the villages must have a recommendation from the village doctor. In 1952, the practice of personal cards for the patients was instituted. 5. Doctors arc paid inadequately, an interne receiving a gross salary of 600 lava per month from which 60 lava are deducted for various purposes. Older physicians reoe vie 700 to 800 lava, and the head of a hospital about 1,000 lava. Only physicians who have more than three children receive family allowances. Ordinary medicines are available in the pharmacies at Pazardzhik. Penicillin can be obtained only against a prescription signed by three physicians. Streptomycin is used in hospitals for special cases, and is given to the patient against a prescription signed by the department head and countersigned by the director of the hospital. PAS is available only at the institutes for the prevention of tuberdulosis.
