THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) 1. The new aircraft factory at Snins. (R 49/ 96)1 is located in a suburb to the east of the center of the town. The plant is bounded in the north by the Sirkena Hill, in the east by a path and the Magurica Hill, in the south by the Snina - Stakein (R 49/A 06) railroad line and the highway running parallel to the railroad; in the west the factory is bounded by the Snina - Humenne (R 49/E 86) railroad line, which skirts the town of Snina in a loop and then runs southward. This railroad line crosses the Prolinka brook, which forms the western boundary of the plant. 2. This factory is being built under the Five-Year-Plan. It is to go into full production on 28 October 1953 and is to employ 3,000, workers. Most of the farm- 'land in the area has been turned into pastureland cooperatives and most of the inhabitants of the neighboring villages have been recruited for work at the plant. 3. At the time of observation, . the. building workers engaged in constructing the plaint numbered about 700 men. The majority of them were brigade workers from the neigh- borhood. Another 300 workers were employees of the Czechoslovak Construction Works (Ceskoslovensko stavebne zavody - CSSZ). The building administration of the CSSZ at Humenne, under the control of Prtmyslove stavby (Industrial Constructions), Kosice branch, is supervising the administration. Most of these 300 workers are women. They were retrained by employees of the First Brno Machine Shops (Prvni brnenska strojirna); 30 mechanics and 10.specialists came to Snina to train the new workers. Foremen for the individual departments are Czechs sent here by the First Brno Machine Shops. 4. In Assembly Hall No. 1 there is a large number of heavy crgnes. In Assembly Hall No. 2 there are inneerous- lathes, 50 drilling machines, as well as milling machines and grinding machines. There are also several vertical revolving lathes and capstan lathes. The machines were arranged for mass production. 5. Electric power is supplied to the factory by the Krompachy power station. Entry to the factory is by a road from Snina to the railroad station. Materials for the factory are brought in over a railroad spur from the station. Complete aircraft engines are manufactured in Assembly Hall No. 1, and from the appearance of this hall it isi$iduced that entire aircraft will be assembled there with the assistance of the heavy cranes; the height of the hall also indicates that it is to be an assembly hall. 7. The small parts workshop (No. 2 on the annexed sketch) manufactures aircraft parts for the Rudy Letov Plant at Prague-Ietnany. 8. Semi-finished products for machining are supplied by the East Slovakian Machinery Works (Vychodoslovenske slevarhy), in Kosice, and by CED Krivan. The East Slovakian Machinery Works was built on the site of the former Kosice airfield; it employs 3,500 workers and a foundry trainees' school is located close to it. 9. ' New water lines for the plant have been laid, leading from a reserv it on Sirkana Hill. 10. The administrative offices of the factory are in Snina. The general manager and the majority of the technical personnel of the factory are Czechs. 11. Employees take their meals in the canteen, in a wooden hut located on the building site. The fare is rich and good. Tenement houses are under construction west of the factory, at the'northern end of the town of Snina. Six houses, each with 18 - apartments, had been built by March 1952. 12. Working morale in the factory is good because the standard of living-of most workers has been raised. For that reason the majority of the workers were convinced Communists and engaged in political activities in the factory.
