In mid-Ma 1 North Korean army troops were at the following locations 'on Mayang-do a. At Hill 143 one platoon of the 578 North Korean Army Unit.l b. Troops in tunnel, built in zig-zag construction. The tunnel a so contained a 122-mm, howitzer, M1938; billets for troops, and a ration dump. a.. I Troops in S-shaped tunnel. Tunnel also contained a 122mm., howitzer , 122-mm. ammunition, and heavy machine guns. At Hill 179 one platoon of the 578 North Korean Army Unit. 2. There was a trench, 1.2 meters deep and one meter wide, along the shore of Mayang-do. This primary defense system was manned by one squad at every 500 meters. A secondary defensive trench system was 70 meters in the rear of the first. All the troops on the island were part of the 578 North Korean Army Unit and they were commanded by a lieutenant colonel. The soldiers were armed with PPSh's or with 7.62.-mm., M1891/30, Mossin-Nagant rifles. Construction of the Mayang-do defense system started in January 1953 and continued through March 1953.
