As far as could be determined, the machines consisted almost entirely
of dismantled equipment from Zeiss, Jena. The machines were the
standard types found in any similar o t* al equipment plant. The
total number of machines is unknown The condition of the
machines was excellent since the German specialists had supervised the
installation and necessary reparations. The German specialists were

It was
assumed that the small cameras were used in research an for
the civilian market. Aerial cameras and photogrammetric equipment
were probably sent to the Soviet Air Force. Kinotheodolites were
renaired for various military units
(periscope production
No periscopes were manufactured at Factory 393, A large lathe used
for that purpose had been transported from Jena to the plant, but
it remained outside for a long period of time and was not used.
Later it was transported to a destination unknown A number
of partially finished tubes for periscopes had been taken from
Jena but were used for lamp posts in the Cultural Parke Later
the tubes were removed when a requirement for special tubing, to
be used in the construction of several colimators for use in the
plant, could not be fulfilled from the plant supply. While the
lathe was in the plant area, the German specialists and Soviet
supervisors often commented, "Here is this expensive machine outside,
unprotected from the elements; what a waste of materiel.." It is
possible that the machine was sent to Leningrad to one of the
optical plants located there. Units of the Soviet Navy are based
at Leningrad, so it is possible that periscopes are produced in
one of the optical plants.
