(FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) 1y About 15 December 1952, preparatory work was started for building a submarine base and pen in the outskirts of Varna, near the village of Asparukhovo (143.11, F 27-54). in the 25X1 channel which leads to the Black Sea. A Soviet geological expedition is using sounding leads to examine the bottom of the channel. Four Bulgarians and three Soviets are 25X1 working with these sounding leads, one of which has been driven to a depth of 55 meters into the channel bed. Many Soviets, even workers,lare employed on this project. The 25X1 Bulgarians working here are small in number and have to undergo several screenings prior to being hired. 2. The project for the construction of the submarine base has been assigned code name No. 568 and the area under construction is a prohibited zone. 3. The lowest wages received by Soviets working here amount to 200 leva per day, while the Bulgarians receive a monthly salary of 800 lava. 4.
