OF PAGES 2 REQUIREMENT NO. ^ REFERENCES The following troops were seen along the Danube River during August and September 1952: 1. Orsova: Rumanian troops were stationed here and were quartered in private homes which had been requisitioned by the Rumanian Ary. The following troops were seen: Soldiers with green epaulettes, believed to be border guards* be Soldiers with crossed gun barrels on black shoulder boards, believed to be artillery. Soldiers with red epaulettes and shoulder boards with an exploding bomb, believed to be infantry. Soldiers with blue epaulettes and blue caps; on the shoulder boards were crossed rifles and an oval emblem with the letters R.P.R. (Rumanian People's Republic). They are believed to be members of the security service troops. 2. Turnu Severin: The following Rumanian troops were observed: a. Soldiers with black epaulettes with crossed gun barrels. Soldiers with black epaulettes and elliptic emblems consisting of jagged lines,$ probably members of the signal corps. c. Soldiers wearing black shoulder boards with elliptic emblems consisting of crossed hammers. Soldiers with blue epaulettes and blue caps with a red band and the troo s i p . ce R.P.R. emblem$ believed to be security serv Soldiers wearing gray blue uniforms and shoulder boards with browli triangles and crossed spades. they Were military workers /ic7. j .F No Soviets at all had been observed in Turnu Severin until. 19 September 1952, when members of the Soviet Air-Force were seen. Only one Rumanian Air---Force soldier and-one civilian pilot were observed in Turnu Severin.. Although the number of troops could not be determined, the approximate percentages are as follows: artillery, engineer;, and signal corps soldiers made up about 30 percent; the infantry another 30 percent; the border guard about 20 per- cent; the security service troops about 20 percent. 3. DanubRiver, 24o kilometer mark,-, About 30 Rumanian soldiers were observed undergoing training on the shore, and other soldiers, presumably engineers, were being instructed in the use of Kovacs-type motorboats. There was probably a camp on the left side of the rivers, but it could not be seen. 4. Danube Rivers 238 kilometer mark-. About 150 pontoons with bridge parts on top.were observed as well as about 50 Rumanian soldiers who were working on the pontoons along the left bank. 5. Braila: The following Rumanian troops were observed: a. Artillery, engineer, signal corps, and infantry troops, but neither the number nor the exact location could be determined. A few border guards and security service troops. Air-force personnel wearing coats with open collars, white shirts and neckties. Their shoulder boards were blue with pilot emblems. Soviet pilots were also observed in Braila. It was said that they are training Rumanian pilots at the airfield outside of Braila. The following Soviet troops were seen: Soldiers wearing black epaulettes with a yellow tank emblem on the shoulder board* b. Soldiers with no emblems on the shoulder boards.
