[Comment: In 1955, the Eact German govermaent conferred awards
and !ionorary titles to "Outstanding" persons in East Germany, as
well as to some individuals in other countries.
A detailed description of the background of the awards and
titles is given in FDD Summary No 120 of 18 November 1953, and
awards and titles conferred by the East German government in 1954
are listed in 00-W-31441.

NATI OP1AL PRIZE 1 1INNERS
The National Prizes of the German Democratic Republic [GDR], which were
awarded for the sixth tine ?.n 1955, ar? divided into classes I, II, and III.
Each class is furthc': divided into two categories: art and literature, and
science and technology. As in previous years, the cash awards given in 1955
were 100,000 DId for Class 1, 50,000 DM for Class II, and 25,000 DM for Class
III. The Naticnal Prizes were awarded to 30 outstanding German scientists,
technicians, artists, and authors as well as to six collectives in 1955.

creasing the quality of and in standardizing electron tubes.
Johannes Thieme, graduate engineer, chief of the electric power depart-
ment at the VEB Buna Chemical Works, for special achievements'in the utili-
zation of electric power reserves to guarantee the production of carbides.
Max Timmmermann, graduate engineer, plant manager at the VEB Hettatedt
Nonferrous Metals Rolling Mill, for the development of a new process to pro-
duce wire from nickel alloys; and for his work in making possible the produc-
tion of precision steel sections for the office machine industry, which made
the GDR independent of West Germany in this field.
Leo Ullperger, deputy department chief and technologist at the VEH Bran-
denburg/Havel Steel and Rolling Mill, for the improvement of furnace construc-
tion through the development of a new type of checker chamber for the Siemens-
Martin furnace, which increased the capacity of the latter.
Karlheinz Wenke, chief designer at the VEB Gotha Sheet-Working Machinery
Plant, for his role in the creation of 50 new designs in the field of plate-
straightening machines, plate-bending machines, and pipe-bending machines.
Wilhelm Woelfel, graduate engineer, technical director at the VEB Weimar
Dam Construction and Hydroelectric Power Installations Enterprise, for his
outstanding work in practical and technical developments for the prefabricated
