Each class is furthc': divided into two categories: art and literature, and science and technology. As in previous years, the cash awards given in 1955 were 100,000 DId for Class 1, 50,000 DM for Class II, and 25,000 DM for Class III. The Naticnal Prizes were awarded to 30 outstanding German scientists, technicians, artists, and authors as well as to six collectives in 1955.
