ANTI-TURKISH MANIFESTO IN SYRIA -- Istanbul, Vatan, 12 Jan 53
Antakya, 11 January (Turkish News Agency) -- On 29 November 1952, the an-
niversary of the separation of Hatay Province from Syria, Syrian university
students stayed away from classes as a silent protest and later published a
secret manifesto, which was distributed to the people. The Aleppo newspaper
az-Zaman has now published the text of this manifesto.
The manifesto states that 29 November is a day of mourning for the Arab
world, not only because of the loss of Hatay on that day but also because of
the UN Palestine partition decision on 29 November 1947. It declares that
the duty of the Arabs is to assure themselves the realization of their ideals
and that the Arabs must realize that they must reclaim by force their lost
rights and lands.
ANTI-TURKISH MOVEMENT IN SYRIA -- Istanbul, Vatan, 17 Jan 53
Damascus, 16 January (Ankara Agency) -- Syrian newspapers have recently
been publishing the program of the Arab Liberation Party, which was founded
by Adip Shishakl.i and which has begun activities in Syria. "he chief points
in this program are as follows: (a) all Arabs constitute a single nation;
(b) every person belietiing in Arabism will be considered an Arab; and (c) the
Arab homeland begins at the Toros Mountains in the north ard extends to the
Sahara Desert in the south.
The party aims at developing a strong Arab nationalism, ever at the cost
of disputes with neighboring countries and even if it implies following a
policy of domination on the basis of this nationalism. Syria has already en-
acted a new law which provides for Arabization of present Turkish and Kurdish
names of cities, towns, villages, cinemas, and coffeehouses within the borders
of Syria. The law provides stiff penalties for owners of establishments who
fail to heed the law.
