ORGANIZE COOPERATIVE FOR POULTRY BREEDING __ Zagreb, Borba, 30 Mar 54
A cooperative for the breeding of pure-blooded poultry, rabbits, and goats
was recently established in Krizevci. To date, 1,000 Rhode Island i,ed ar.d Sus-
sex eggs have been acquired. At the founding assembly of the cooperative, 27
members were registered into the cooperative.

Plana are under way in the Srez Cooperative Association in Ljutomer to
establish a soil analysis laboratory. The Agronomy Faculty of Ljubljana will

The Institute of Adriatic Cultures (Institut za Jadranske kulture) recently
procured soil analysis equipment from s California firm.
This is the third set of such equipment in Yugoslavia.

To protect crops and livestock from diseases and pests, the Srez Aasocie-
tion of Farm Work Cooperatives in Rumski Srez recently opened an agric~,:tural ~
chemist's shop to aid in assuring larger crops and better quality agricultural
products.

University are to visit Zenica to lecture before the Society of Physicians of
Zenica. The following physicians are to lecture on their specialities: Dr Ante

surgeon; and Dr Drago Cop, administrator of the Central Rheumatological Station'
in Zagreb.

For outstanding work in medical sciences, Dr D,7ure. Dekanic, chief of the
Gynecological and Obstetrics Sectior. in the Provincial Hospital in Hovi Sad,

A new public health center was recently opened in D,jakovo. The new center
is important since there is no hospital in the area. The center has an anti-
tuberculosis dispensary, dental clinic, an eight-bed hospital, and a 14-bed
maternity section. The center will give aid to mobile health unite throughout
the sre, and to school clinics.

research. They have discovered that the effect of virus on living cells can

COMBAT EQUINECOCCAL INFECTION IN DUBROVNIK -- Zagreb, Borba, 7 Apr 54
Veterinarians of the city of Dubrovnik and of Dubrovnik Srez recently
held a meeting to discuss organizing to combat equinecoccal infection, a
disease which is spread by dogs. The disease is must widespread in Dal-
matia, Hercegovina, and Montenegro. In 1953, 100,000 kilograms of meat was
spoiled because of this disease.
It was 3ecided at the meeting that strict measures would be enforced
against dog owners who do not cooperate in having their dogs examine3 once
a year.
LIVESTOCK DISEASES PREVALENT IN YUGOSLAVIA -- Zagreb, Narodni list, 3 Apr 54.
In Yugoslavia livestock diseases ar> more prevalent than in any other
European country. In Croatia, over 2 million head of poultry die annually
from Newcastle disease.

At the beginning of May, an exhibit of aids for the teaching of natural
sciences will be on display in four rooms of the school museum (Skolski muze,j)
in Zagreb.
The "Ucila" enterprise i.n ZsgrPb nnrl the school museum are organizing
this exhibit. Most of the equipment was designed by Professor Vagner. Equipment
on display will pertain to the teaching oi' geography, physics, chemistry, zo-
ology, botany, and astronomy. The equipment if low in cost and each piece
can be used for 20 to 30 experiments.

At the annual assembly of the Biological Society of,Bosnia-Hercegovina on
27 March, Dr Payle Fukarek lectured on the flora and fauna of Bosnia-Hercego-
vina; Dr Radivo,je Milin lectured on the syndrome of adaptation; and Engr Viktcr
Rzehak on the protection of crops i^ Yugoslavia and abroad. Dr Zel,jko Mad,jarek
demonstrated experiments illustrating the physiology of animals.

The Slovenian Chemical Soviety (Slovensko kemiJsko drustvo) met on 27 March
and reelected Prof Dr Males Samec as 'its president.
The society has 140 members.
CHEMISTS AND TECHNOLOGISTS I+L~ET IN BELGRADE -- Belgrade, Politika, 29 Mar 54
At the assembly of the Society of Chemists and Technologists of Serb+a
held in Belgrade, the establishment of an Institute of Chemistry was discussed.
Until such an institute is established, the society will serve industry by sid-
ing in the construction of s superphosphate plant at Bor and an oxygen plant in
Serbia, and by making known the methods of utilizing sulfur dioxide obtained
at copper emel*,ers. The society will also study the possibi?+.ties of enrich-
ing domestic 1lgnite; expanding the dye, medical and canning industries; and
will plan a gas line to Belgrade.
CENTRAL COUNCIL OF CHEMICAL INDUSTRY TRADE UNIONS BOLAS PLENUM -- Novi Sad,

The plenary session of the Central Council of Trade Unions of the Chemi-
cal Industry of Yugoslavia will be held in Zagreb on 10 and 11 April. Adminis-
tration by workers and political cork among workers will be the main topics of
discussion.
BUREAU OF GEOLOGICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH AT WORK -- Zagreb, Borba, 28 Mar 54
The Bureau of Geological and Geophysical Research (Zavo3 za geoloska i
geofizicka istrazivanJa) is exploring the antimony mine in the ZaJaca basin in
western Serbia. The bureau is also working at B1agoJev Kamen, Veliki MaJdan,
and Lece mines; and is aiding the miners at the Bu,jarovac mine.
In 1954, the bureau will complete a detailed analysis of the Kopaonik
mountain area, long known for its ore deposits.

The Yugoslav Navy H,ydrographic Institute (Hidrografeki institut Jugoslaven-
ske ratne mornarice) in Split recently published "Granice morskih pred,~ela uz
istocnu obalu Jadranskog mora" ("The Limits of [Yugoslav] Sea Areas Along the East-
ern Coast of the Adriatic Sea").

The founding assembly of the Croatian Speleological, Society was held in
Zagreb on 2 April. Over 50 scientific workers and speleologists attended.
The newly established society plans to study karst phenomena and related
problems, protection of caves, publish studies of speleological work, and co-

In Belgrade 15 days ago, the Yugoslav Students' Association for Technical
Development (Jugoslacenski studentski savez za tehnicki odgo~) xas established
as a central agency for increasing the level of general technical knowledge of
ell students. Councils in all university centers are being established. An
i.~itiatory council has been organized at Zagreb University, which is preparing
for a founding assembly to be held the end of April.

On 26 March, the Council for the Electrical Economy (Odbor za rtlektropri-
vredu) of the Society of Mechanical and Rlectrical Engineers and Technologists
of Serbia (Drustvo masinskih i elektrotehnickih inzen,jera i tehnicara Srbi~e)
will meet to discuss a proposal for alleviating the electric power crisis in
Serbia in 1954 and 1955.
