THIS IS UNEVALU,TED INFORMATION HOUSING CONSTRUCTION IN USSR, 1953-1954 (This report contains information from the Soviet press comparing housing construction in 1.953 and 1951+. Included are figures on in- dividual housing construction, housing construction performed by vari- ous ministries, and total housing construction reported by individual cities. Numbers in parentheses refer to appended sources.) Individual Housing Construction in USSR In 1953, workers in the Soviet Union received 700 million rubles in loans for building their own homes. Of the 203,000 homes under construction it was estimated that more than 100,000 of them were in use by February 1954. The total living space of these homes is in excess of 3,500,000 square meters. In 1954, loans totaling one billion rubles will be extended to individuals for housing construction. As a result of this construction, there will be an ex- pected increase of 3,865,000 square deters in living space. (1) Ministry of Railways USSR In 1954, the volume of capital investments in housing construction per- formed by the Ministry of Railways is to increase 23 percent over 1953? In Moscow 16 multistoried buildings with a total of 30,000 square meters of liv- ing space are to be built. About 40 million r~"bles have been allotted for housing construction for workers of the Kirov Railroad System,a considerably larger amount than was allotted in 1953. (2), In 1953, workers of the Tashkent Railroad System received twice as much living space as in 1952. In 1954, the volume of construction for housing and for cultural and public services'for work- ers of the Tashkent Railroad System will be twice that of 1953? Individual builders in the Ministry of Railways are to put 300,000 square meters of living space into use in 1954. (6) Ministry of Civil and Rousing Construction Latvian SSR In 1954, the Ministry of Civil and Housing Construction Latvian SSR is to double the volume of construction completed in 1953. (7) Primorskiy gr In 1954, more than twice the amount allotted in 1953 has been earmarked for building new homes for workers in Primorskiy Kray. (8) Alma-Ata In 1953, about 40,000 square meters of living space were put into use in Alma-Ata. In 1954, this ficure is to increase to more than 60,000 square meters. (9) In 1953, 100,000 square meters of living space were to be put into use In Ashkhabad. (10) During the first 11 months 'of 1953, 85 buildings with a total living space of 1.2,300 square meters were completed in Ashkhabad. (11) In 1954, 51,000 square meters of living space are to be built and occupied in Ashkhabad. (12) In 1953, construction organizations of Baku put 77,000 square meters of liv- ing space into use. (13) According to the plan, about 110,000 square meters were to have been built. (14) In 1954, housing construction will increase 30 percent over 1953. More than 100,000 square meters are to be built in 1954. (15) In 1953, construction organizations in Minsk were to put into use 110 residential buildings with a total living space of 110,000 square meters. (16) During 11 months of 1953, the workers of Minsk received about 70,000 square meters of living space. (17) In 1954, 326 residential buildings with a total living space of 268,000 square meters are to be built in Minsk. (18) In 1953, 90 large residential buildings were built and put into use in Rostov. In 1954, more than 100 are to be put into use. (19) sumKait 1953 In Sumgait, twice as much living space is to be completed in 1954 as in (20) Ust'-Kameno_orsk Residents of Ust'-Kamenogorsk received more than 25,000 square meters of living space in 1953.
