DEFECTIVE PICTURE TUBES
BUILD MORE, BETTER TV SETS -- Moscow, Moskovskiy Komsomolets, 21 Nov 53
In 1954, the USSR plans to produce 325,000 television sets; in 1955,
760,000 sets; and in 1956, one million sets.
Present sets have 9 x 12 centimeter and 13 x 18 centimeter screens. In
1954, stores of Glavelektrosbyt (Main Administration for the Sale of Electrical
Output) will put on sale the Avangard, Sever, and other new models which have
18 x 24 centimeter screens.
NEW MODELS OF TELEVISION SETS -- Moscow, Komsomol'skaya Pravda, 21 Oct 53
9? Plants of the Ministry of Electric Power Stations and Electrical Industry
will soon be producing the Avangard, Pioner, and two models of the Sever tele-
vision sets. The Avangard is half the size of the Leningrad T-2 set, iS '
lighter than the T-2, and has a larger screen. The new sets are easier to ad-
just and are equipped with picture tubes that are not subject to ion burns.
In 1954, Glavelektrosbyt plans to make thousands of VE-1 rubber-blade
fans available to consumers.
Moscow, Vechernyaya Moskva, 22 Oct 53
Two new models of television sets have been developed recently, the
Avangard (TL-1) and the Pioner (TL-2).

The screen of the Avangard has four times the area of the KVN-49 screen.
The top of the set is raised when it isdn operation, thus providing better
ventilation for the set. The controls and loud-speaker are inside the set.
The 16-tube set is comparatively easy to assemble and simple to operate.
The screen of the low-cost Pioner set is only slightly larger than the
KVN-49 screen. The Pioner weighs half as much as the KVN-49 and is smaller
in over-all size. The Pioner has nine tubes and an electrostatic-deflection
picture tube. Like the Avangard, the Pioner has the loud-speaker inside, and
the lid of the set must be raised to operate it.

and 5.3 times in 1956 (the output at the beginning of the plan period].

COMPLAIN OF DEFECTIVE PICTURE TUBES -- Moscow, Moskovskaya Pravda, 17 Nov 53
A reader of Moskovskaya Pravda complained that the picture tube of his
KVN-49 television set went out of order 10 days after he purchased .' the. set.
In a period of 5 months, the picture tube has been replacedsix'times.' These
defective tubes are made by the Zaprudnya Glass Plant.
B. Lyubetskiy, director of the Zaprudnya Glass. Plant states that defects
in the tubes can be attributed to faulty design and to low-quality materials
used in production.
Over a long period of time. the.,Zaprudnya Glass Plant has received low-
grade platinite, which reduced brightness and caused the picture tubes to
break down rapidly. The plant suppl-ing platinite has taken measures to im-
