1 October
30 September, no rain fell in most of the European USSR Light rains
fell n the Karelo-Finnish SSR, the northwestern regions of the RSFSR, and also
in the Urals. Daytime temperatures were 8 degrees above zero in Arkhangelsk
and Chkalov, and 9 in Kirov. Temperatures rose to 1-2 degrees above zero in the
northwestern regions. Noon temperatures were 13 degrees above zero in Leningrad,
14 in Velikiye Luki, and 11 in Vologda. Temperatures ranged between 13 and 14
degrees in the Baltic countries, the Belorussian SSR, the central region and
the Middle Volga Region. Temperatures dropped in the Ukraine, the Primes, and
the Northern Caucasus. Daytime temperatures were 16 degrees above zero in Kiev
and Lvov, 17 in Odessa, Simferopol', and Krasnodar, and 20 in Kishinev. During
the night, ground frosts were recorded in the soutr rn portion of the European
USSR.
Light rains fell in Western Siberia, except the Kulundinskaya Steppe and
the southern portion of Omskaya Oblast. Daytime temperatures ranged between 7
and 9 degrees above zero in Tyumenskaya and Omskaya oblasts and between 12-15
de;reps in Novosibirskaya Oblast and Altay and Krasnodarskiy Krays.
2 _October
On 1 October, slightly cloudy, dry weather with daytime temperatures rang-
ing between 16 and 20 degrees above zero prevailed in the Ukraine, the Crimea,
the Caucasus, and the Lower Volga Region. During the night, ground frosts were
recorded in VoroshilovgradsA.aya and Stalinskaya Oblasts.
Moderately warm, dry weather favorable for field work prevailed in the Belo-
russian SSR and the western regions of the central zone. Noon temperatures were
13 degrees above zero in Orel, 14 in Riga, 15 in Moscow, and 16 in Minsk.
Cold, dry weather prevailed in the northern regions and the Urals. Temper-
atures in these areas did not rise above 6 degrees above zero.
Rains fell in the western portion of the Ukrainian SSR, the central chern-
ozem zone, and the eastern portion of the cent al zone. During the first 12 hours
of 1 October, precipitation amounted to 6 to 8 millimeters in some localities.
Quite heavy rains fell in the Baltic republics. Warm weather which prevailed in
the southern half of the European USSR favored the development of winter crops.
Winter wheat is growing rapidly in the Northern yhucasus. This crop has
reached the bushing stage in some localities in Stavropol'skiy Kray. Wheat has
entered the bushing stage in most areas of the Ukrainian SSR and the central chern-
ozem zone. Winter rye has begun to bush in all the European USSR, except the
western portion.
Cold weather prevailed in Western Siberia. Daytime temperatures did not
rise above 5-6 degrees above zero. Rain fell almost everywhere.
Much colder weather prevailed in Central Asia.

On 2 October, overcast weather with rain prevailed in all the area north
of a line running from Vil'nyus to Smolensk, Ryazan', and Ufa. During the
first 12 hours of the day, 3-5 millimeters of precipitation fell in this area.
No rain was recorded south of this line. Cold weather prevailed in the northern
and northeastern regions. Temperatures were 6 degrees above zero in Arkhangelsk
and 8 degrees in Petrozavodsk, Velikiye Luki, and Ufa.
Daytime temperatures ranged between 15 and 17 degrees above zero in the Bal-
tic countries and the Belorussian SSR, between 16 and 19 degrees in the Lower
Volga Region, between 17 and 22 degrees in the Ukrainian SSR, and rose to about
20 degrees in the Northern Caucasus.
Winter wheat has begun to sprout in the Crimea. It has entered the three-
leaf stage in the Moldavian SSR and the bushing stage in some localities. -Wheat
has begun to grow in some areas of Krasnodarskiy Kray.
Cold weather prevailed in Western Siberia and Central Asia. Noon temper-
atures were 7 degrees above zero in Omsk, 9 in Novosibirsk, 11 in Krasnoyarsk,
and 13 in Barnaul.
4 October
On 3 October, overcast weather with rain prevailed in the European USSR.
During the first 12 hours of the day, precipitation amounted to 14-17 millimeters
in some areas of Kuybyshevskaya and Chkalovskaya oblasts and the Bashkirskaya
and Tatarsl.aya ASSRs. Previous rains and moderately warm weather have favored
the development of winter crops. Daytime temperatures in these areas ranged be-
tween 12 and 14 degrees above zero.
Cold weather prevailed in the northern and northeastern regions. Daytime
temperatures were 4 degrees above zero in Arkhangelsk, 5 in Kirov, and 8 in
Gor'kiy and Sverdlovsk.
Temperatures ranged between 16 and 20 degrees above zero in the Ukrainian
SSR, the Crimea, the Northern Caucasus, and the Moldavian SSR. The highest tem-
perature of 25 degrees above zero was recorded in Nal'chik and Makhachkala. It
was warm and dry in the Transcaucasus.
Cool weather prevailed in Central Asia. Temperatures were 18 degrees above
zero in Ashkhabad and 15 in Tashkent.
On 5 October, warm weather with daytime temperatures of about 20 degrees
above zero prevailed in most of the Ukrainian and Moldavian SSRs, the Crimea,
and the Northern Caucasus. Temperatures ranged between 12 and 13 degrees above
zero in the Baltic republics, the Belorussian SSR, and the central zone. Noon
temperatures were 6 degrees above zero in Kazan', 3 in Chkalov, 2 in Kirov, and
zero in Ufa and Sverdlovsk. Light rains fell north of the central zone. Dry
weather prevailed in the rest of the European USSR. The growth of winter crops
and grasses in pastures continued normally in the southern regions and all the
western half of the European USSR.
Cold weather is gradually spreading from the brals into Western Siberia
and the Kazakh SSR. Daytime temperatures dropped almost to zero in Omskaya
and Tyumenskaya oblasts. It was still warm in Novosibirskaya Oblast and Altayskjy
Kray, with daytime temperatures ranging between 15 and 16 degrees above zero.
On 4 October, rains fell in many areas of Western Siberia and the Kazakh, Uzbekh,
and Tadzhik SSRs and continued in some localities on 5 October.

It became cooler in Central Asia. Temperatures were ].6 degrees above zero
in Ashkhabad and 12 degrees in Tashkent and Stalinabad.
7 October
On 6 October, a sharp drop in temperature was recorded in most of the Eu-
ropean USSR. Temperatures at 1300 hours were 12 degrees above zero in Odessa,
8 in Kiev, 7 in Minsk, 6 in Moscow, 5 in Leningrad, and one degree above zero
in Petrozavodsk. Cold weather with temperatures around zero prevailed in the
northern Urals. It was warm in the Lower Volga Region, the easter, portion of
the Ukrainian SSE, and the Northern Caucasus.
Rainsfell in most of the Ukraine and the central chernozem zone. Dry
weather prevailed in the Baltic republics, the Belorussian SSR, the Urals, and
the Volga Region.
A drop in temperatures in Western Siberia accompanied by rain spread into
the eastern regions. During a 24-hour period, the temperature in Novosibirsk
and Barnaul dropped from 15-16 degrees above zero to 1-3 degrees. The growth
of winter crops in Siberia has ceased.
Rain fell in many areas of the Kazakh SSR and Central Asia.
8 October
On 7 October, cool weather prevailed in most of the European USSR. During
the first half of the day, rains fell in. the Baltic republics, the western portion
of the Ukrainian SSR, the central zone and the Northern Caucasus.
During the day, temperatures somewhat above 10 degrees above zero were re-
corded only in the Crimea, the Moldavian SSR, the southwestern portion of the
Ukrainian SSR, and the Lower Volga Region. Warm weather prevailed in the North-
ern Caucasus.
The lowest temperatures were recorded in the northern and western regions.
Temperatures were 7 degrees above zero in Kiev and Orel, 4 in Riga and Minsk,
and 2 in Leningrad. Temperatures of 1-2 degrees below zero prevailed in the
Karelo-Finnish SSR, Arkhangel'skaya Oblast and Komi ASSR. Snow fell in some
localities.
Cold weather with temperatures about zero accompanied by rains and snow in .
some localities prevailed in Western Siberia and the northern portion of the Kazakh
SSR. During the night, subzero temperatures were recorded in the southern por-
tion of the Kazakh SSR and the northern regions of Central Asia. Daytime temper-
atures were 12 degrees above zero in Kzyl-Orda, 14 in Dzhambul, 19 in Tashkent
and Stalinabad, and 27 in Ashkhabad.,
October
On 8 October, temperatures dropped in most of the European USSR. Snow fell
in the central and northern regions. A snow cover has already formed in Arkhangel'-
skaya and Vologodskaya oblasts and the eastern portion of Leningradskaya Oblast.
Daytim temperatures were. 5 degrees above zero in Kursk and Kiev and 2 degrees in
Leningrad, Moscow, and Minsk. Daytime temperatures rose to 10-12 degrees above
zero in the Volga Region south of Kazan', the eastern portion of the Ukrainian SSR,
the Crimea, the Moldavian SSR, and the Northern Caucasus. Winter crops and grasses
in pastures are growing normally in these areas.

The planting of gardens and bushes is taking place in many areas of the
Crimea and the Ukrainian SSR. The harvest of late cabbage has begun in the
central and northwestern zones.
Temperatures dropped in Western Siberia. A snow cover has formed in northern
Omskaya and. eastern Tyumenskaya oblasts. Daytime temperatures were 7 degrees
above zero in Omsk, 4 in Novosibirsk, and one degree in Tobol'sk.
Clear weather prevailed in southern Kazakh SSR and Central Asia.
10 October
On 9 October, cold weather prevailed in most of the European USSR. Tem-
peratures at 1300 hours were 4 degrees above zero in Minsk and Voronezh, 3 in
Tambov and Kazan'. one degree in Moscow, Kirov, and Vologda, and zero in Ark-
hangelsk. Daytime temperatures above 10 degrees were recorded only in the
Crimea, the Moldavian SSR, the eastern portion of the Ukrainian SSR, and the
Northern Caucasus. Light rains and snow in some localities fell in the central
zone.
A slight rise in temperature was recorded in the Baltic republics; this
rise in temperature is gradually spreading into the Belorussian SSR.
On 8 October, light rains which favored the development of winter crops
fell in the Kuban'. Winter crops are in the quiescent stage in all the northern
half of the European USSR.
Cold weather prevailed in Western Siberia. Daytime temperatures were 4
degrees above zero in Barnaul and zero in Novosibirsk. Precipitation in the
form of rain and snow fell in Tyumenskaya, Tomskaya, and Novosibirskaya oblasts.
A snow cover has formed in the northern portion of Siberia.
Warmer weather prevailed in the southern portion of the Kazakh SSR and
Central Asia. Daytime temperatures rose to 25 degrees above zero almost every-
where.
11 October
A rise in temperature which began on 9 October is increasing and spreading
to the east. On 10 October, temperatures were 13 degrees above zero in Riga and
11 degrees in Leningrad. During a 24-hour period, temperatures rose from one to
8 degrees above zero in Moscow and from It to 8 degrees in Minsk. Cold weather
prevailed in the Volga Region and the Urals. Daytime temperatures were 8 degrees
above zero in Stalingrad, 5 in Saratov, 2 in Kazan', and zero in Ufa.
Rains and snow in some localities fell in the northern regions and the Urals.
Heavier snowfalls were recorded in Arkhangel'skaya, Vologodskaya, Yaroslavskaya,
Kalininskaya, and Novgorodskaya oblasts. Dry weather prevailed in the Belorussian
SSR, the Ukrainian SSR, the central chernozem zone, and the Volga Region.
Warmer weather prevailed in Western Siberia. On 10 October, daytime tempera-
tures were 10 degrees above zero in Novosibirsk and 13 in Barnaul. Rains fell
in this region.
13 October
On 11 and 12 October, warm, mostly dry weather prevailed in most of the Eu-
ropean USSR. Cold weather prevailed only in the northern regions, the Urals, and
the Middle Volga Region, while precipitation fell in some localities in the form

of wet snow and rain. On 12 October, noon temperatures were one degree above
zero in Syktyvkar and Sverdlovsk, 2 in Ufa, 3 in Kirov, 4 in Arkhangelsk, 5
in Vologda and Kazan', and 6 in Gor'kiy and Chkalov.
Daytime temperatures ranged between 11 and 14 degrees above zero in the
western and central regions and between 14 and ]7 'ie rAO~ in the Ukraine and
Northern Caucasus. Temperatures were 20 degrees above zero in Simferopol' and
26 in Yerevan.
The rise in temperatures which prevailed in most areas of the European USSR
accelerated the development of winter crops.
Cold weather with precipitation in the form of wet snow prevailed in West-
ern Siberia and the Northern Caucasus. On 12 October, temperatures were 5 de-
grees above zero in Barnaul and 2 degrees in Novosibirsk and Akmolinsk.
Rain fell in the mountain regions of Central Asia. Slightly cloudy, dry
weather?with daytime temperatures ranging between 15 and 20 degrees above zero
prevailed in most other areas of Central Asia.
14 October
On 13 October, slightly cloudy, warm, dry weather prevailed in the Baltic
countries, the Ukrainian SSR, and the Lower Volga Region. Noon temperatures
were 13 degrees above zero in Riga, Leningrad, and Lvov, 15 in Kursk, 16 in
Odessa and Stalingrad, 17 in Rostov on the Don, and 22 in Dnepropetrovsk. Cloudy
weather without precipitation with temperatures ranging between 10 and 12 degrees
above zero during the day and between 8 and 10 degrees during the night prevailed
in most of the -central oblasts and the Middle Volga Region. Light rains fell only
in Kalininskaya, Ivanovskaya, Kostromskaya, and Gor'kovskaya oblasts.
Cold aeai;her prevailed in the northern regions and the U:als. Noon temper-
atures ranged between 2 and 4 degrees above zero. During the night, temperatures
dropped to 1-2 degrees. below zero. A light snow cover has formed in the northern
portion of Molotovskaya and Sverdlovskaya oblasts. The growth of winter crops
has ceased.
Rain fell in Western Siberia; wet snow fell in the Ural regions. Daytime
temperatures were one degree above zero in Omsk, 5 in Novosibirsk, 9 in Barnaul,
and 11 in Krasnoyarsk.
Slightly cloudy, dry weather prevailed in Eastern Siberia. On 13 October,
noon temperatures were about.10 degrees above zero and dropped during the night
to about 5 to 7 degrees below zero.
Weather favoring the harvest of cotton prevailed in Central Asia. Daytime
temperatures ranged between 15 and 20 degrees above zero. Light rains fell only
in the mountain regions.
15 October
On 114 October, warm, mostly dry weather prevailed in the European USSR,
except in the northeastern regions. Noon temperatures were 7 degrees above zero
in Gor'kiy, 8 in Saratov and Arkhangel'sk, 10 in Petrozavodsk, Moscow, Tambov,
and Voronezh, 11 in Stalingrad, Orel and Vologda, 12 in Kursk and Kiev, 13 in
Voroshilovgrad, Lvov, Riga, and Leningrad, 14 in Velikiye Luki and Rostov on
the Don, 15 in Odessr., 18 in Dnepropetrovsk, and 20 in Krasnodar.
Temperatures ranging from zero to 2 degrees above zero were recorded in the
northeastern regions and the Urals. Temperatures dropped to 3-7 degrees below

zero in Kirovskaya and Molotovskaya oblas;.;. On 13 October, snow fell in the
above-mentioned areas. A light snow cover has formed on the fields in Molotov-
skaya and Sverdlovskaya oblasts.
During the first 12 hours of 14 October, light precipitation fell in the
Moldavian SSR and adjacent areas and also in Leningradskaya and Arkhangel'skaya
oblasts. Slightly cloudy, dry, very warm weather which favored the harvest of
tea and cotton prevailed in the Caucasus. Overcast, told weather with precipi-
tation in the form of rain and wet snow prevailed in Western Siberia and the
northern portion of the Kazakh SSR. A snow cover has formed in the northern
portion of Omskaya Oblast. Dry weather prevailed in Eastern Siberia.
A slight drop in temperatures was recorded in the eastern regions of Cen-
tral Asia.
On 15 October, very warm, dry weather prevailed in most of the European
USSR. Temperatures rose in the northeastern regions and the Urals. Noon tem-
peratures were one degree above zero in Ufa, 3 in Sverdlovsk, and 8 in S kt kar.
Daytime temperatures were 6 degrees above zero in Arkhan el'sk y
in Petrozavodsk, Orel, Tambov, and Stalingrad, 11 in Kursk, Minsk, land1Gor'kiy,
12 in Moscow and Leningrad, 1.3 in Kiev, Dnepropetrovsk, and Voroshilovgrad, 14
in Rostov on the Don and Riga, 16 in Odessa, 17 in Lvov and Simferopol', and 19
in Krasnodar. Daytime temperatures ranged between 22 and 24 degrees above zero
in the Armenian SSR and the Black Sea Coast of the Caucasus.
On 14 October, light rains amounting to about 2-6 millimeters fell only in
the Moldavian SSR and Odesskaya and Nikolayaevskaya oblasts. During the first
12 hours of 15 October, heavy rains fell in the Crimea. Rains were also re-
corded in the southern portion of the Ukrainian SSR and in some localities. in
the Northern Caucasus. Recent precipitation has moistened the soil thorougLly
and improved the conditions for the growth of winter crops. Warm, dry weather
which has prevailed in most areas has favored the harvest of potatoes and the
plowing of winter fallow. The harvest of grapes and tea is continuing in the
Georgian SSR.
17 October
On 16 October, warm weather without precipitation prevailed in most of the
European USSR. Noon temperatures were 4 degrees above zero in Arkhangelsk, 6
in Leningrad, 8 in Moscow and Kirov, 9 in Kazan' and Gor'kiy, 11 in Riga, Minsk,
Tambov, and Saratov, 15 in Kiev, 16 in Simferopol' and L'vov, 18 in Rostov on
the Don, and 21 in Krasnodar.
Cold weather with precipitation mostly in the form of snow prevailed in
Western Siberia. Much colder weather prevailed in the Kazakh SSR and the north-
ern regions of Central Asia. Daytime temperatures were 2 degrees below zero in
Aktyubinsk and Akmolinsk and zero in Alma-Ata. It was 7 degrees above zero in
Tashkent. Warm, d` weather prevailed in the southern portion of Central Asia.
Heavy rains fell in the Karelo-Finnish SSR, Arkhangel'skaya Oblast, some
areas of the central region, the Crimea, and the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus.
Warm weather with precipitation prevailed in the Transcaucasus. Cold weather
was recorded in Western Siberia and the Kazakh SSR. Daytime temperatures were
zero in Novosibirsk and Akmolinsk, one degree above zero in Barnaul and Alma-

Central Asia. Daytime temperatures were 10 degrees above zero in Tashkent and
12 degrees in Ashkhabad.
On 17 October, very warm, dry weather prevailed in the southern half of the
European USSR, Rains fell in the western, central, and northeastern regions
which, for example, amounted to 9-12 millimeters in Smolenskaya and Velikoluk-
skaya Oblasts.
Noca temperatures in the Urals and the northern regions of the European USSR
did not rise above 4 degrees above zero. Daytime temperatures were 5 degrees-above
zero in Vologda, 8 in Leningrad and Gor'kiy, 9 in Moscow and Kazan', 11 in Kuybyshev,
Voronezh, and Riga, 14 in Minsk, Kursk, Kishinev, and Voroshilovgrad, 15 in Rostov
on the Don, 16 in Dnepropetrovsk and Kiev, 17 in Odessa, 18 in Simferopol', 20 in
L'vov, and 22 in Yerevan. During the night, temperatures in tlw Middle Volga Re-
gion dropped to 4-7 degrees below zero.

20 October
On 19 October, cloudy weather without precipitation prevailed in most of the
European.USSR. Light rains fell only in some localities of the Belorussian SSR,
the central chernozem zone and Komi ASSR. Overcast weather with precipitation was
recorded in Arkhangel'skaya and Vologodskaya Oblasts.
Cold weather prevailed in the northeastern regions. Noon temperatures were
about zero in Sverdlovsk and Ufa, one degree above zero in Syktyvkar and Kazan',
3 in Kirov, and about 6-8 degrees in the -central regions. Warm weather prevailed
in the Ukraine, the Crimea, and the Northern Caucasus. Daytime temperatures were
10 degrees above zero in' Dnepropetrovsk, 12 in Stalingrad, 14 in Odessa and Kinhi-
nev, and 16 in Rostov, on the Don and Simferopol'.
Rains fell in the western regions of the Georgian and Armenian SSRs. Day-
time temperatures were 19 degrees above zero in Yerevan.
Cold weather with precipitation in the form of rain and snow prevailed in
Western Siberia.
Slightly cloudy weather prevailed in Central Asia. Daytime temperatures
rose to 17 degrees above zero in the Ashkhabad, Stalinabad, and Tashkent areas,
during the night they dropped to 2 to 4 degrees below zero in some localities.
21 October
On 20 October, light rains fell in Vologodskaya, Yaroslavskaya, Tvenov-
skaya, Kostromskaya slid Gor'kovskaya oblasts and the Chubashkaya and Mari'iskaya
ASSRs. Cloudy weather without precipitation prevailed in the rest of the Euro-
pean USSR.

On 21 October, light rains fell in the central chernozem zone and in Sarotov-

Cloudy weather without precipitation prevailed in the rest of the European USSR.
Cold weather prevailed in the northeastern regions. Daytime temperatures
were one degree below zeeo in Kirov, one degree above zero in Sverdlovsk, and 2
degrees in Gor'kiy and Ufa. Temperatures ranged between 5 and 7 degrees above
zero in all other areas. Warmer weather prevailed towards the west and south.
Temperatures, were about 10 degrees above zero in the Riga and Kishinev areas and
13 degrees in Simferopol'.
Cold weather prevailed in Western Siberia. Daytime temperatures were one

23 October
On 22 October, cool weather prevailed in most of the European' USSR. Daytime
temperatures were 1-2 degrees below zero in the Komi ASSR, Sverdlovsk, and Ufa.
Temperatures were about zero in Kuybyshev, one degree above in Saratov, and 2 above
in Kazan'. Temperatures ranging between 5 and 7 degrees above zero were recorded
in the Baltic republics, the Belorussian SSR, and the Northern Caucasus.
During the first 12 hours of the day, light precipitation was recorded in the
Estonian SSR, and Leningradskaya, Pskovskaya and Novgorodskaya oblasts. Heavy
rains amounting to 15 millimeters fell in Astrakhan'skaya Oblast. Quite heavy
rains fell in the Transcaucasus.
Dry weather prevailed in Western Siberia. Temperatures were one degree above
zero in Novosibirsk and 3 to 5 degrees above in Omsk, Barnaul, and Krasnoyarsk.
The boundary of the snow cover advanced almost to Novosibirsk. Daytime temper-
atures in the southern portion of the Kazakh SSR did not -ise above 15 degrees
above zero.

24 October
On 23 October, cold weather prevailed in most of the European USSR. Day-
time temperatures were about zero in Syktyvkar, Sverdlovsk, and Ufa, one degree
above zero in Kirov, and 3 degrees in Gor'kiy. Snow fell in the northern and
northeastern regions.
Temperatures ranged between 7 and 8 degrees above zero in Velikiye Luki,
Moscow, Riga, Voronezh, Voroshilovgrad, Odessa, and Simferopol'. Rains fell
in the Baltic republics, the northwestern regions, the central chernozem zone,
and Rostovskaya and Astrakhanskaya oblasts.
Dry weather prevailed in the Belorussian SSR, the Ukraine, and the Crimea.
Rain fell in the Transcaucasus.
Temperatures rose in Western Siberia. Daytime temperatures were 6 degrees
above zero in Novosibirsk, 9 in Barnaul, and 12 in Krasnoyarsk.

25 October
The drop in temperatures which began on 24 October in the northern Urals
has spread into the central regions and the Volga Region. Daytime temperatures
dropped.to o' (?egree above zero in Moscow and Gor'kiy and to one degree below
zero in Kuybyshev Temperatures were 2 degrees below zero in Ufa and 4 degrees
below in Kazan' and Kirov. Temperatures were 6 degrees below zero in Syktyvkar.
and Sverdlovsk during the day, and 10-15 degrees below zero during the night.
On 2,4 October, comparatively warm weather prevailed in the southern and
southwestern regions. Temperatures were 15 degrees above zero in Odessa and
Kishinev,.10 in Kiev and.Rostov on the Don, and 6 to 8 degrees in Minsk, Orel,.
and Voronezh.
Much colder weather prevailed in Western Siberia and the Kazakh SSR. Day-
time temperatures were 3 degrees below zero in Omsk, 10 degrees below. in Tobol'sk,
and 2 degrees above zero in Novosibirsk. A snow cover extended in the northern
regions of Siberia approximately as far as Tomsk.
27 Octotier
On 26 October, warmweather.prevailed in the western regions of the European
USSR. +Daytime.temperatures were 8 degrees above zero in Velikiye Luki, 9 in Riga,
10 in Minsk, .12 in.Kiev, 14 in L'vov,'a~d 15 in Kishinev. Light precipitation
was recorded pnly in Chernigovskaya, Sumskaya, Bryanskaya, and Kurskaya oblasts.
Dry weather with daytime temperatures ranging between 5 and 8 degrees above
zero prevailed in the central zone, the Volga Region, and the Northern Caucasus.
The temperature was:10 degrees above zero in the Krasnodar area.

Stalinabad, 2 in Ashkhabad, and 4 in Alma-Ata.
On 27 October, warm, mostly dry weather prevailed in the northwestern, west-
ern, and central regions of the European USSR. Noon temperatures were 6 degrees
above zero in Arkha;:gel'sk, 7 in Vologda, Moscow, and Orel, 8 in Leningrad, 9 in
L'vov and Odessa, 10 in Kishinev, and 11 in Riga and Petrozavodsk. A slight rise
in temperatures accompanied by precipitation was recorded in the northeastern re-
gion and the Urals. Daytime temperatures were 2 degrees above zero in Kirov and
4 degrees in Syktyvkar. Slightly cloudy, dry weather prevailed in the Volga Re-
gion and the southeastern region.
Weather conditions in most of the European USSR were favorable for field
work. Light precipitation fell only in the northern regions and the Urals. During
the first 12 hours of the day, light rains fell in Rostovskaya Oblast and the Azer-
baydzhan SSR.
Temperatures rose and snowfalls ceased in Western Siberia. Daytime temper-
atures were 4 degrees below zero in Novosibirsk, 2 below in Omsk, and one degree
above zero in Tobol'sk.
Cold weather with daytime temperatures not rising above one degree above
zero prevailed in Central Asia.
On 28 October, colder weather accompanied by strong winds and precipitation
in the form of rains and wet snow prevailed in the northern portion of the. Eu-
ropean USSR and the Urals. Noon temperatures were 6 degrees above zero in Syktyv-
kar, 2 in,Arkhangel'sk,.Ufa, and Chkalov, and one degree below zero in.Sverdlovsk.
Warm, dry weather prevailed in the rest of the European USSR. The warmest
weather, with daytime temperatures ranging between 10 and 12 degrees above zero was
recorded in the Baltic republics and the Caucasus.
Overcast weather with strong winds and precipitation in the form of rain and
wet snow was recorded, in Western Siberia and the northern portion of the Kazakh SSR.
Cold weather with temperatures dropping to 3-5 degrees below zero during the
night and?.rising to 2-5 degrees above zero during the day prevailed in the southern
regions of the Kazakh SSR and Central Asia.
A snow cover has formed in the fields of Western Siberia and the northern por-
tion of the Kazakh SSR. A light snow cover has also formed in the Transcaucasus..
30 October
On 29 October, considerably colder weather prevailed in the northern and north-
eastern regions of the European USSR which quickly spread into the central and east-
ern regions. On 29 October, temperatures dropped to 17-22 degrees below zero in
Komi ASSR, 10-15 below in the Urals and 5-10 below in the Middle Volga Region.
Daytime temperatures were 7 degrees below zero-in Arkhangel'sk, 4 below-in Ufa
and Vologda, 2 below in Saratov, one below in Chkalovy.one degree above-zero in Tam-
bov, 2 in Moscow, 4 in Riga, 5 in Leningrad and Orel, 6 in Kursk, Voronezh, and
Stalingrad, 8 in Dnepropetrovsk and Lvov, 12 in Kishinev, Rostov on the Don, and
Krasnodar, and 14 in Simferopol'.

Urals and the Middle Volga Region. A snow cover has formed to the northeast of
a line running from Kirov to Ul'yanovsk, Kuybyshev and Chkalov. Rain fell in
Leningradskaya, Novgorodskaya, and Kalininskaya oblasts. Slightly cloudy, dry
weather prevailed in the southwestern portion of the European USSR.
Overcast weather with snowfalls prevailed in Western Siberia.
Dry weather prevailed in Central Asia where temperatures rose somewhat.
31 October
On 30 October, lower temperatures prevailed in most of the European USSR
except the western portion of the Ukrainian SSR and the Crimea. The noon temper-
ature in Stavropol' did.not rise above one degree above zero. Daytime temperatures
were one degree below zero in Rostov on the Don, h degrees above zero in Voroshilov-
grad and Stalingrad, 5 in Kursk, Saratov, Kuybyshev, and Gor'kiy, and 6 in Kirov.
Lower temperatures accompanied by strong winds and snowfalls prevailed in the
Urals and the Middle Volga Region. During the first 12 hours of 30 October, light
snow fell in the Stavropol', Voroshilovgrad, and Stalingrad areas and the central
chernozem zone. A snow cover has formed in the northeastern region of the European
USSR and the Urals, which, in some localities, is more than 5-10 centimeters deep.
A new drop in temperatures accompanied by snowfalls was recorded in the west-
ern regions of Siberia.
It is gradually becoming warmer in Central Asia. Daytime temperatures were 9
degrees above zero in Tashkent and 12 degrees above in Ashkhabad.
