The first, dated 23 July 1953, dealt with an incrense in wages; the second, dated 24 October 1353, dealt with a reduction in prices. This publication is a report on these developments as reflected in the Soviet newspzper in East Berlin_7 On 23 July 1953, the GDR Council of 1?Sinisters issued a decree which stated that, ac a result of current fulfillment of production plans and changes in the Economic Plan and the Financial Plan, certain categories of wages would be increased. This decision was reached on the suggestion of the Executive Committee of the Free Cerman Trade Union Federation and the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Socialist Unit;- Party. Specifically, the decree states. 1. Workers in people-owned and similar industrial enterprises, agricul- tural and forestry enterprises, construction enterprises, transportation, pos- tal and telecommunication services, MTS, municipal enterprises, government enterprises, and cooperative trade, whose wages fall into categories I-IV, :+i11 receive an increase in their pay. 2.
