1953 RUMANIAN RARVEST BEGINS;
JULY STATISTICS
~ummary: The following report, taken from July 1953 issues
of the Bucharest daily newspapers Romania Libera and Munca, con-
tains data on the 1953 Rumanian harvest. Included in this report
are figures for the country as a whole and for 16 individual re-
giunes, comprising the entire grain area of the country.

A communique of the Central Directorate of Statistics of 19 July 1953
reports that the MTS plan was fulfilled 103.4 percent for the first quarter
of 1953, xith 370,000 hectares more worked than during the same period in 1952?
A total of 2,510,328 hectares of grain were harvested by 15 July 1953? State
farms averaged 1,700-2,500 kilograms of wheat per hectare and collectives 1,5~-
2,200 kilograms of wheat per hectare. Individual peasants planted 16.2 percent
more cotton, 35.9 percent more hemp, and 6.7 percent more soybeans than in
1952.(1)
State farms harvested 16,884 hectares of grain by 30 June 19531 1-27 state
farms hnve aLnost completed reaping and are progressing with threshing, while
77 state farms used combines. State farms in Oral?a Regiune nre in the lead,
with 23 percent of the grain harvested, followed by Arad, Bucharest, and
Craiova regiunes. The Banloc State Farm, Timisoara Regiune, harvested 9145 hec-
tares of grain, mainly using combines. The Grabat State Farm, Arad Regiune,
harvested 936 hectares and the Peciul-Nou State Farm, Timisoara Regiune, 775
hectares by 2 July 1953? The Jimbolia State Farm, Timisoara Regiune, harvested
200 hectares with combines. The Deveselu and Afumati State Farms, Craiova Re-
giune, and the Voiteg State Farm, Timisoara Regiune, harvested large areas with
combines. Threshing is also progressing well and more than 100 state farms
have delivered a part of their quotas.(2)

Rumanian youths donated, 2,355,496 hours of vol~mtary labor during June,
saving the country 3,736,722 lei. Youngsters planted 1,116,360 saplings,
cleaned up 234,442 hectares of marsh land, and weeded and harvested thousands
of hectares of grain fields and vegetable gardens. They tied 29,034 vines .and
collected 170,000 kilograms of peas and 6,738 kilograms of medicinal herbe~in
se:sn regiuaes. Youths in Craiova Regiune planted 730,464 saplings and cleaned
266,00 square meters of ditches.(3)
