CD NO. DATE OF SUPPLEMENT TO REPORT NO. NEW SERVICES, SHIPPING OPERATIONS ON USSR WATERWAY SYSTEM; MERGER OF BALTIC STEAMSHIP COMPANIES NEW CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS DEVELOPED FOR SHIPBOARD USE -- Moscow, Vodnyy Trans- port, 25 Jul 53 A number of new construction materials have been developed from inexpensive raw materials. Some of these have successfully replaced expensive metals, with no decrease in quality or dependability, and in some cases showing significant advantages in weight, durability, and cost. Lignofol, for example, is being widely used as lining for deadwood bearings. Polychlorovinyl foam plastic can be employed as heat, noise, and moisture insulation. It weighs less than cork and costs two sevenths as much. An elas- tic polychlorovinyl foam plastic of the PKhV-9 type has been developed, de- signed especially for use in life jackets Rock wool insulatlr'n has been used in the refrigerated holds of the M/S Marshal Govorov with fairly good results. Vinyl plastic is produced in sheets and in the form of contoured materials, pipes, and fittings. Excellent results have been obtained in the treating of soft woods by a method developed by Professor S. Val'kovekiy. After saturation with tanning extract and exposure to ammonia vapor, the wood takes on the color of a polished hardwood. Of interest also is the shipboard installation of laminated wood plastics. These materials are strong and possess anti-friction characteristics.
