USSR WEATHER AND CROP REPORTS 1 - 28 APRIL 1952
On 1 and 2 Aprillovercast weather with rain, snowfall, and strong winds
was observed in the northwestern European USSR, Light precipitation in the
form of rain and snow was recorded in Belorussia and in the western and
northwestern Ukraine. Slightly cloudy weather with light and moderate frosts
continued in the eastern regions and the Middle Volga Region.
During the first 12 hours of 2 April, precipitation also occurred locally
in the central European USSR. The weather was very warm in the southwestern
Ukraine, Crimea, and Transcaucasus. Strong winds were observed in the North
Caucasus.
On 2 April, noon temperatures were -10 degrees in Sverdlovsk and Chkalov,

in Gor'kiy and Kuybyshev, -l-iniVelikiye Luki,1Mosscow, and Lvov, Stalingrad,

above zero in Voroshilovgrad, 2 degrees in Orel and Kursk, 3 in Kiev, 8 in
Rostov on the Don, 16 in Odessa, 20 in Yerevan, 21 in Krasnouar, 22 in Kishinev,
and 24 in Simferopol'.
Very warm weather was observed in Central Asia, southern Krasnoyarsk Kray,
and Irkutsk and Chita oblasts.

On 6 and 7 April, warm, mostly slightly cloudy weather was observed in most
of the European USSR. Light rain was recorded locally in tht southwestern and
south;rn Ukraine. Cold weather provetiod in the --astern European UISR.

On 7 April, noon temperatures were -9 degrees in Ufa, -7 in Chkalov, -6 in
Sverdlovsk, -2 in Kuybyshev, zero in Tambov, 1 degree above zero in Arkhangelsk,
Petrozavodsk, Kirov, Voronezh, and Stalingrad, 2 degrees in Gor'kiy and Kursk,
3 in Orel, Lvov, and Rostov on the Don, 4 In Voroshilovgrad, 5 in Moscow,
Vologda, and Dnepropetrovsk, 8 in Leningrad, Minsk, and Nal'chik, 9 in Odessa
and Simferopol', 13 in Krasnodar, and 17 in Tbilisi.
Cold weather continued in West Siberia. It continued warm in Central Asia.
Considerable rain fell in the mountain regions of Central Asia. Daytime tempera-
tures rose to 14-17 degrees.
10 April 1952
On 8 and 9 April, slightly cloudy, comparatively warm weather continued in
most of the European USSR. It was cooler in the Volga Region. Light rain fell
in the Baltic countries, Moldavia, and the Transcaucasus; strong winds were
observed in the North Caucasus.
On 9 April, daytime temperatures were almost generally above zero. They
were 1 degree above zero in Ufa, Orel, and Saratov, 2 degrees in Tambov, Kuy-
byshev, Voronezh, and Kursk, 3 in Kazan' and Gor'kiy, 4 in Arkhangelsk, Kirov,
Moscow, and Voroshilovgrad, 5 in Leningrad, Vologda, Riga, and Kiev, 7 in
Kishinev, Dnepropetrovsk, Simferopol', Makhachkala, and Tbilisi, 8 in Minsk
and Odessa, 9 in Krasnodar, and 17 in Yerevan.
Slightly cloudy weather with light e.nd moderate frosts prevailed in most
of Kazakhstan and West Siberia. On 9 April, daytime temperatures were -7
degrees in Novosibirsk and Akmolinsk, -6 in Aktyubinsk, -5 in Omsk, and -4 in
Barnaul.
The weather became slightly cooler in Central Asia. Temperatures did not
rise above .l degrees.
Due to the warm weather, snow cover has retreated northward to a line
.running approximately from Aktyubinsk to Kavyshin, the area south of Stalin-
grad and Boguchar, and Sumy. In Belorussia, snow has disappeared only in
the extreme southern portion.
Field work is in progress in the southern. Ukraine and in Moldavia. Sowing
of spring wheat and spring barley has been reported from southern Rostov Oblast
(Gigant Sovkhoz).
Planting of vegetables is proceec'tng in Central Asia. Almonds, peaches,
and apricots are flowering. Apples, pears, and cherries are beginning to
flower.
On 10 and 11 April slightly cloudy weather with wide diurnal temperature
variations was observed in most of the European USSR. Light snow was recorded
locally in the northwestern regions. Overcast weather with precipitation in
the form of snow and rain and strong winds was observed in the Crimea, Cau-
casus, and eastern Ukraine.
On 11 April. temperatures were generally abnve zero except in the southern

In West Siberia and most of Kazakhstan, it became warmer, although snow
fell locally. In Central Asia and southern Kazakhstan, warm, dry weather
replaced the recent cool spell. The weather was favorable for field work in
Central Asia.
The snow cover limit has retreated still further northward.

17 April 1952
On 15 and 16 April, mostly clear, warm weather was observed in most of
the European USSR. It was cloudy with precipitation in the form of rain and
snow in the northern and eastern regions and the Urals.
On 16 April, noon temperatures were generally above zero. They were
degrees in Chkalov, 7 in Kazan', 8 in Kirov, 10 in Vologda, 11 in Leningrad,
14 in Moscow, 17 in Kursk and Rostov on the Don, 18 in Lvov, Dnepropetrovsk,
and Voroshilovgrad, 20 in Kiev, and 22 in Kishinev and Odessa.
Comparatively warm weather continued in most of West Siberia. Precipi-
tation in the form of rain and snow fell locally.
The line south of which the soil is suitable for sowing runs through Brest,
Kharabali (Astrakhan' Oblast), Gur'yev, Kzyl-Order, and Sorkand (Taldy-Kurgan
(oblast). North of this line, field work has not yet been possible because of
the muddy condition of the ground. Corn is being planted in the southern Ukraine.
Sowing of spring grains has been reported from southern Zhitomir and Kiev
oblasts. In Central Asia, spring grains are in the bushing stage.

On 20 and 21 April, cool weather prevailed in most of the European USSR.
It was warm only in the Ukraine, Lower Volga Region, and North Caucasus; strong
winds were recorded locally there. Rain and Lnow fell in the Middle Volga
Region, Bashkir ASSR, and Arkhangelsk Oblast. Rain also fell in Belorussia;
the Ukraine, and the southern European USSR.
On 21 April, temperatures were generally above zero at noon. Noon tem-
peratures were 2 degrees in Kazan', Ufa, and Sverdlovsk, 3 in Kirov and Saratov,
5 in Arkhangelsk and Gor'kiy, 7 in Moscow and Chkalov, 8 in Leningrad, Kiev,
and Stalingrad, 9 in Velikiye Luki and Voroshilovgrad, 10 in Dnepropetrovsk
and Krasnodar, 11 in Minsk, 12 in Riga, 14 in Kishinev, 15 in Lvov and Odessa,
and 16 in Simferopol'.
Slightly cloudy weather mostly without precipitation was observed in
Kazakhstan and West Siberia. Quite heavy rains fell. in Alma-Ata Oblast.
It continued warm and dry in Central Asia. Daytime temperatures rose
as high as 21 degrees.
Sowing of early spring ceps has 'ceu; :- round VViuLkt in
~ iiu:ek liDis,st and
Uryupinsk in Stalingrad Oblast. Early aprica crops have begun to sprout in
southern Rostov Oblast and to bush in Central Asia.

On 22 and 23 April, slightly cloudy, warm weather was observed in the
southern half of the European USSR. It was cloudy and cool and precipitation
occurred locally' in the northern regions. Cloudy weather prevailed also in
the eastern and southeastern regions of the European USSR.
On 23 April, daytime temperatures were 2 degrees in Arkhangelsk and
Petrozavodsk, 3 in Ufa, 4 in Kirov and Sverdlovsk, 5 in Chkalov, 6 in Kazan',
8 in Vologda, Nal'chik, and Makhachkala, 1.1 in Kuybyshev, 13 in Saratov,
Stalingrad, and Tbilisi, 15 in Gor'kiy, 16 in Tambov, Voroshilovgrad, and
Rostov on the Don, 17 in Riga, 18 in Simferopol', 19 in Moscow, Orel, and
Krasnodar, 20 in Leningrad, Kursk, and Dnepropetrovsk, 21 in Kiev, and 22 in
Minsk, Lvov, and Kishinev.
Warm weather continued in Central Asia, eastern Kazakhstan, and southern
West Siberia. Cool weather with precipitation in the form of rain and snow
and strong winds prevailed in the rest of West Siberia.
Winter crops in the extreme southern Ukraine, in the Crimea, and in the
North Caucasus have entered the tube stage; those in Central Asia are con-
tinuing in the tube stage. Field work has begun in the Saratov area. Early
spring crops are being sown in Kursk, Voronezh, and Stalingrad oblasts. Spring
crops have begun to sprout in the southern Ukraine; they are in the 3-leaf
stage in Krasnodar Kray, in the bushing stage in Central Asia.
26 April 1952
On 24 and 25 April, warm, clear weather continued in the southern, western,
and central Eurcpean USSR. Cold weather continued in the Baltic countries and
the northern and eastern European USSR. Rain was recorded in western Belorussia,
the Baltic countries, and Kirov Oblast. Snow cover has retreated to a line run-
ning approximately through Kern' and Tot'ma, north of Kirov, and through Kazan'
and Ufa.
On 25 April, daytime temperatures were 4 degrees in Sverdlovsk, 5 in Ufa,
6 in Riga and Leningrad, 10 in Chkalov, 14 in Kirov, 16 in Odessa and Simfero-
pol', 17 in Kazan' and Lvov, 18 in Minsk, Orel, Kiev, Kishinev, and Rostov on
the Don, 20 in Voroshilovgrad and Stalingrad, 21 in Moscow and Tambov, and 22
in Velikiye Luki, Kuybyshev, and Saratov.
Unstable, cold weather with precipitation in the form of rain and snow was
observed in West Siberia and northern Kazakhstan. The colder weather from
Kazakhstan has spread to northern and western Central Asia.
In Central Asia, heading of winter crops has been noted and potatoes are
sprouting. It is reported from Tadzhikistan that cotton is sprouting there.
Field work has begun in southern Altay Kray.
On 27 and 28 April, slightly cloudy, warm weather with daytime temperatures
of 20-25 degrees prevailed in the southern half of the European USSR. Mostly
clear, comparatively cold weather was observed in the northern and eastern
European USSR. Light rains fell in Belorussia, the Baltic countries, and the
western Ukraine. Strong, winds were re'.or'ied ii. the north Caucasus and the
eastern Ukraine.

On 28 April, daytime temperatures were zero in Sverdlovsk, 2 degrees. in
Ufa, 4 in Petrozavodsk, 6 in Kirov, 7 in Chkalov, 10 in Kuybyshev, 12 in Sara-
tov and Mskhachkala, 13 in Ral'chik, 14 in Vologda, 17 in Stalingrad and
Tbilisi, 18 in Leningrad, Moscow, Voronezh, and Yerevan, 20 in Orel and Kursk,
21.in Riga, 23 in Velikiye Luki, Minsk, Kiev, Kishinev, and Voroshilovgrad,
and 25 in Dnepropetrovsk and Rostov on the Don.
Cold, cloudy weather with precipitation in the form of rain in the
southern portion and in the form of snow in the western was observed in West
Siberia. On 28 April, noon temperatures were 1 degree above zero in Tobol'sk
and Novosibirsk, 2 degrees in Omsk, and 4 in Darnaul.
Warm weather continued in Central Asia. Rain fell in the mountainous
areas. Daytime temperatures rose to 18-21 degrees.
The line up to which the soil is suitable for srnring has reached the areas
around Pskov, Kalinin, Vladimir, Ulyanovsk, and Chkalov. The soil in the
southern portion of West Siberia is now also suitable for sowing.
