This morning, cloudy veather with clearing sad light frosts continued in the
central regions of the Ruropean USSR. Overcast weather with snowfall. was
observed in the northeastern Europeat USSR. It was warm in the Baltic countries.
Temperatures at 0900 this morning were -11 degrees in Murmansk, -8 is Kuy-
byshev and Chkaiov, -7 in Voronezh and Syktyvkar, _6 in Arkhangel'ek, -5 in Sara-
tov and Smolensk, -4 in Stalingrad and Kirov, -2 in Kharkov, Krasnodar, Rostov,
and Vologda, zero in Kiev, Lvov, and Minsk, 1 degree above zero in Odessa, and
2 degrees in Yalta.
Laot night's lovest temperature in Moscow vas 5 degrees below zero; it vas

In Moldavia, north winds are blowing and for several days snox has been
Palling. The temperature is 8 degrees below zero. The ground is frozen and
fields and meadows are covered with a solid blanket of gnaw.
In recent years, snow has been a rare occurrence in Moldavia; the last real
saovfal.l tool: place in 1947. Kolkhoz vorkere have begun mass snov-retention
vork. A January snow in Mcldav:a is a sign oY large barveete. (3)

This morning, mostly cloudy veather with light frosts prevailed in moat of
the European USSR. Overcast, warm, windy weather with rain and vet snow con-
tinued only in Belorussia, the Baltic countries, and the northvestern European
USSR. Snowfalls vere recorded in the western Urals and locally in the northern
European USSR, It was varm in the Crimea sad Transcaucaeus.
Temperatures at 0900 this morning were -10 degrees in Chkalov, -9 in Ufa,
-7 in Molotov, Stalingrad, sad Saratov, -5 in Tambov and Kuybyshev, -4 in Vor-
onezh, -3 in Astrakhan', -2 in Kharkov and Krasnodar, -1 in Smolensk, Poltava,

and Minsk, and 4 degrees in Yalta and Sochi.

This morning, varm, cloudy weather prevailed in most of the European USSR.

Yesterday, snowfalls, enovetorme, and strong winds were observed in western
Belarueein. Ro precipitation fell in the eastern part of the republic.
Daytime temperatures were i uegree below zero in Polotsk, Vitebsk, Minsk,
and Mogilev, zero in Gomel', Bobruyek, Mozyr, Baranovichi, Vileyka, Grodno, and
Brest, and 2 degr~'4 above zero in Pinsk. (4)
13 January
Yesterday, partly cloudy weather was observed in .;nlbruesia. Precipitation
vne recorded locally. Daytime temperatures were 1 degree in Grodno and Vitebsk,
3 degrees in Minsk, Mogilev, Gomel', Bobruyek, Polotsk, Baranovichi, Pinsk, and
Brest, and 4 in Mozyr. {4)
The cooler weather of the last days, which ie now spreading throughout
southern Central Aaia, was caused by the intrusion of moist and cold air menses
from the north and northwest.
Rain, which changed to snow during the night of 12 January, fell in Ashkha-
bad, Mary, and Chardzhou obleats. Precipitation use heaviest in soatheaetern
Ashkhabad Oblast and in moat of Mary and Chardzhou oblasts, were the 24-hour
total ~?eached 12-20 millimeters.
The average depth of snow cover on the morning of 12 January was 4-9 ceati-
metere in the regions mentioned above, 10-14 centimeters in Tedzhen.
This was the first snow to fall in Ashkhabad this winter. It ley 2-4 centi-
meters deep but disappeared quickly the next day. (5)
