THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION SOVIET WAR PREPARATIONS IN BULGARIA PREPARE FOR WAR AGAIRST TURKEY, flGOSIAVIA, GREECE, -- Istanbul, En Son Dakika 13 Jan 52 , A Moscow-trained officer named General Kinov is preparing Bulgaria for war for the Soviets. Kinov, a former guerrilla, fled to the USSR from Bulgaria and was trained as a soldier in Moscow. Kinov has assigned specialists on his staff the task of preparing Bulgar- ian youth for war. All students in schools higher than secondary schools are ,eing forced to take parachute training; also, Communist youths who desire to do so, are being trained as voluntary soldiers for fighting in Korea. Bulgarians of military age not only are forced to work every year without compensation in the compulsory labor ccmpanies, but are also obliged to learn how to use newly invented weapons. In recent months, the labor companies have been used in Macedonia and in the Rhodope Mountains. In fact, the entire Bal- kan population has been mobilized to straighten mountain roads and to open new secret military roads. Paralleling this war activity, all factories have been adjusted to war production. Coal from Bulgarian mines is being stored in secret depots in the Balkans. The Soviets have also converted the coast near Sozopol and Akhtopol into secret submarine bases close to Turkish territorial waters. The shores near these two towns are surrounded by high rocky precipices and cliffs. The Soviets have also reportedly constructed in caves secret submarine-munition depots and provision depots for use in a war against Turkey. In addition to these preparations, the Bulgarian government has stored in ammunition dumps, which were recently constructed in many secret areas, vast quantities of military equipment from the USSR. Soviet advisers in the Bul- garian Ministry of Education are directing the Communist propaganda hour Lou the radi] and the military training programs included in the curricula of NAVY NSRR_-T AIR FBI Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/09/23: CIA-RDP80-00809A000700050353-3 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/09/23: CIA-RDP80-00809A000700050353-3 ? schools. During these classes, the Bulgarian youth are instructed in the du- ties which will be incumbent upon them in a future war of liberation to be conducted against the imperialists. When imperialists are mentioned, the countries implied by the Soviets are Turkey, Yugoslavia, and Greece. These countries are accused of having sold themselves to the Anglo-Saxons. All youtl? and sport organizations are also rapidly being prepared for war. The Communist leaders of higher educat?,)n and university youth organizations, as well as of primary and secondary-school youth organizations known respec- tively as Septemvriche and Georgi Dimitrov outhe] are collecting money through these organizations, to erect a huge statue of Stalin in Sofia. Some of this money is being sent to Chinese Communist youth organizations. The wheat from this year's harvest is being loaded on ships in Stalin Burgas harbors and is being sent to Communist China. Living as they are in hunger and poverty, the Bulgarian people are violently incensed at food prod- ucts and cereals being sent to China, but they are obliged to remain silent in the fece of violent pressure. Isolated groups revolt against the Communists in some areas and engage in sabotage activities, jut there is no sign of gen- eral revolt or revolution because Communist spice are everywhere, even in the smallest villages. The military airfields in Plovdiv, Sofia, Stara Zagora, and Gornavitsa Torn Oryakhovitsa?7 have been expanded, and "oviet military planes from Odessa and Se:astopr" arrive daily at these fields. Although the Bulgarian peace treaty limits Bulgarian military forces to 60,000, the present government under Chervenkv has 150,000 C?munists under arms. In short, the Soviets have converted Bulgaria into a military ammunition depot and base. The Bulgarian Communist leaders are not conforming to the re- quirements of international law and treaties, and, in spite of the protests of the democracies, the Bulgarian Communists have brought their country to a'po- sition where it can open fire at any moment. against neighboring states, if it is ordered to do so by Moscow. -- Necmettin Deliorman 17 AIRFIELDS UNDER CONSTRUCTION -- Tehran, Tolu, 6 Feb 52 It is reported from Bulgaria that the Bulgarian government sow has 400 military airplanes. Furthermore, other airplanes have been sent to Bulgaria from the USSR. Currently, 17 airfields are under construction in Bulgaria, several of which will be used for jet planes. One airfield under construction is located 55 miles from the Turkish border. This airfield will be able to handle all types of aircraft.
