Dzerzhinskiy is the only enterprise in the country which produces santonin, a valuable medi- cal preparation derived Prom wild wormwood. OUTPUT OF PASK INCREASES __ Riga, Sovetskaya Latviya, 26 Jun 51 The Riga Pharmaceutical Plant completed its half-year program 10 days early., Its 6-month plan for output of its basic type of production, the medical preparation PASK, xas exceeded by 12.6 percent. During the firct 5 months of 1951, the plant accumulated more than 2 million rubles of above-plan profits; tens of thousands of rubles' xorth oP rax and other materials rare saved. The production coat oY output was significantly loxered. Labor productivity is increasing regularly. TO HOLD CONFERENCE ON NEH DC'^ -- Riga, Sovetskaya Latviya, 1 Jul 51 On 2 or 3 July, a conference rill be held at the Acade~y of Sciences Latvian SSR on the results of the use of the nex medical preparation, "Puratsilin", (furacylin) developed several years ago. Its pharmacological, microbiological, and other properties have been stuaied in detail by the scientific workers oP the Academy of Sciences Latvian SSR. Later Puratsilin underwent clinical. testing in surgery and other Pielde of medicine. Valuable properties of the preparation were revealed which have beneficial effects on ell suppurative infections. The Riga Medical Institute and a large number oP medical institutions in Latvian SSR, as xell as in Moscow and Leningrad, have engaged in research on the clinical use oP Puratsilin. Pure Vitamin C is obtained by reacting glucose xith acetone, chloroform, and aulfaric acid. The conversion of glucose is done in special apparatus of stainless steel, aluminum, and porcelain. Ascorbic acid ie used for other purposes besides preventing and curing diseases. When added to fats, it helps to preserve their quality over a long period of time, A Stalin Prize xas awarded to G. N. Lebedev, chief of the Main Adminis- tration of the Vitamin Industry, who directed the work, and to other Soviet scien~iats and engineers for the 3ndustr'vl synthesis of ascorbic acid. SHIPS VITAMINS TO SATELLITES -- Kishinev, 5~vetskaya Moldaviya, 22 Aug 51 The Moscow First Vitamin Plan is producing Vitamin D2, which is widely used in agriculture for productive livestock raising and aviculture. The plant recently shipped large consignments of its output to the People's Democracies. DEVELOP NEW AN'!'IBIOTIC -- Duesseldorf, Chemische Industrie, Sep 51 Synthomycin, a newly developed antibiotic, is being produced in the USSk as a remedy for dysentery, typhoid, and pneumonia. The antibiotic is generally obtained from a type of ray fungus; hoxever, a synthetic process for producing the drug is said to have bees found. TREAT WCUNDS WITH BACTERICIDAL PAPER -- Minsk, Sovetskaya Belorussiys, 5 Oct 51 1. N. Kul'bin, Candidate of TechnicFl Sciences, director of the technolo- gical laboratory of the Academy of Sciences Latvian SSR, has proposed the use in medical practice of the so-called bactericidal paper he invented. The paper is saturated with n special chemical solution which kills bacteria on the surface oi' the affected parts of the skin, thus contributing to the rapid healing of wounds. The paper is being used in the treatment of alight wounds, fresh surface cuts, abrasions, and superficial burns. In a special order, Smirnov, Minister of Realth USSR directed extensive use of the bactericidal paper in dispensary practice. The Riga Pharmaceutical Chemical Plant has mastered production of the paper. NSW DRUG P.ELIEVES ADDISON'S DISEASE -- Tallin, Sovetskaya Estoniya; 21 Oct 51 The Moscow Endocrine Preparations Plant of the ifinistry of Meat and Dairy Industry USSR has mastered the nroduction of a sew medical preparation, Kortin, in ampules. Kortin was developed by a group of scientific associates of the All- Union Institute of Experimental Endocrinology under the leadership of N. A. 9hereshevekiy. It is a dependable remedy in the treatment of Addison's disease, and is being used successfully also during ~onvalescen;e after serious infectious diseases.
