A new application has been found for peat in Poland as a basic raw material
for many industries. Dry distillation or extraction of peat gas yields peat tar,
illuminating gas, various phenols, semicoke, and pitch. Peat is useful in the
manufacture of methyl alcohol, acetic acid, cresol, ammonia, and gasoline. The
building industry uses peat for soundproofing and pipe insulation, the textile
industry for coarse-fiber cloth, and the food industry for preserving fruits and
eggs.
The nationalized Przemysl Torfowy (Peat Industry) near Elblag is building a
new plant with three hydraulic presses. Production of insulation wallboard, to
be substituted for imported cork slabs, is to begin in February 1951.
Additional peat-processing installations will be set up within the next few
years. Under the Six-Year Plan, production will be greatly expanded to exploit
1.8 million hectares of rich deposits.
Peat production increased tenfold between 1948 and 1950. The 1950 total
is to be quadrupled in the next 5 years.

Peat gasification will be expanded in Poland under the Six-Year Plan. In
addition, the construction of power plants operating on peat is planned.
