According to the correspondent, two armies of approximately 30,000 men of the Second Field Army were sent from Yunnan to the Vietnamese border in Kwangsi and Kwangtungy and a transport unit consisting of about 600 men was sent to P'ing- hsiang in Kwangsi to transport materiel into Viet Nam. He pinpointed the disposition of troops as follows. 1. From Hu-men at the Pearl River Estuary to Swatow Harbor Elements of the Forty-second, Forty-seventh and Forth-ninth Armies and all of the Forty-third and Forty-fourth Armies of the Fourth Field Army. The Forty-third Army is stationed at Chao-shan, and the Forty-fourth Army is defend- ing the east bank of the Pearl River estuary. 2. From West Bank of the Pearl River Estuary to Lei-chou Peninsula The Forty-second and Forty-seventh Armies of the Fourth Field Army. The main force of the Forty-second Army was assigned the defense of the west bank of the Pearl River estuary. Of the 3,000 troops of the Fourth Field Army which ar- rived recently in Chung-shan, one regiment was sent to T'ang-chia-wan and Ta-huan, two companies to Ta-huan-pu and Hsiao-huang-pu, and the remainder to other nearby areas. The defense of a string of islands outside of the Pearl River estuary was taken over by the Fourth Field Army when an element of the Kwangtung-Kwangsi Border Region Column was reassigned and moved from those islands. Last.month the Thirty-eighth Army and the Fortieth Army under the Fourth Field Army were sent to the Canton area from Wuhan to receive replacements. There is a rumor that the Fortieth Army was sent to the Lei-chou Peninsula recently. The Forty-eighth Army of the Fourth Field Army was assigned to defend the Canton- Hankow Railway from Lo-ch'ang to Ch'ing-yuan. Although the Fourth Field Army has many subordinate units, their T/O's are not filled. For eXample, the several armies which return d from the North- east lacked a total of 20,000 men. Consequently, they were d nt to South China to receive replacements and training. The Lu-shun.Detachment and the Public Se- curity Division were assigned to defend Canton; the Nanking Detachment, to defend Hai-k'ou; the Second and Fourth Field Armies, to defend the Kvangtung and Kwangsi and Viet Nam frontier; and an element of the Third Field Army was assigned to de- fend the areas along the upper reaches of the East Rivera - 2 - CONFIDENTIAL (S U ~D~ a Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/25: CIA-RDP80-00809A000600400591-1
