KWANGTUNG REPAIRED HIGHWAYS RESTORE HUNAN TRADE -- Peiping Jen-min Jih-pao, 12 Dec 50 Peiping (gsin-hua)?-- Since the liberation of Hunan, 3,200 kilometers of the province's 3,800 kilOnleters Df motor highways have been repaired. This has greatly facilitated the marketing of accumulated stocks of tung oil and the distribution within the province of articles needed in industry. The vol- ume of highway transportation during September 1950 was 1,900,000 ton-kilome- ters. In July, 20 percent of the motor trucks were idle at any given time, while in September only 15 percent were idle. The volume of the Yuan-ling tung oil industry is now three times what it was at the time of liberation. Highway transportation and river boat transportation are both increasing. SHIN-CH'I HIGHWAY BRIDGE COMPLETED -- Hong Kong Wen-hui Pao, 11 Jan 51 Chung-shan -- An important feature for the improvement of highway trans portation between Macao, Shih-ch'i (1nd Cumumbers was in the completion in tmido characters Chiang-men (2), cember 1950 of the~238-foot-long highway bridge across the Chi Chiang (3), on which the city of Shih-ch'i is situated. The bridge was formally opened to traffic on 1 January 1951. KWANGTUNG ROAD PLANS FOR 1951 -- Hong Kong Hsing-tao Jih-pao, 27 Jan 51 Chu-chiang -- Among the 1951 plans for highway construction in Kwangtung are three roads, for which the.city of Shih-ch'i is one of the terminals. The general directions, points en route, and other terminals are as follows: 1. Ch'i-Sui Highway. From Shih-ch'i northward to Canton passing through Chiang-I'ou (4)', Chi-lung (5), Hsiao Lan (6), and Jung-ch'i (7S, then across one of the channels bf the Chu Chiang to connect with the'Chiu-chiang?(8) highway, and thus enter Canton by the southwest bridge. This highway passes through the four haiens-of Chung-shah, Hsun-te, Nan-hai, and Fan-yu. From Shih-ch'i westward to Chiang-men and Hsin-hui (9), passing Tieh-shih (10) and San-men-cha (11) to Ku-chen-(12), and thence across a large river channel, the Wai-hai (13) fb-y rerrybo-1 , to Chiang-men. 3, Tou-Ch'i Highway. From .Shah-ch'i to Tou-men (14). Leave Shih- ch'i by the highway from Shih-ch'i to Macao; after some distance, cross by ferry to Van-chou Island (15) which is Ch'u No 5 of Chung-shan Hsien; cross Van-chou Island and cross the water again on to the island which is referred to as Ch'u No 8 in Chung-Shan Hsien, landing at Pai-chiao (16), a-id thence by a section of road to be newly constructed connect with an existing highway that runs north and south through the city of Tou-men. TIENTSIN HAS TRACKLESS TROLLEY -- Tientsin Jih-pao, 13 Dec 50 Tientsin -- On 12 December 1950, a trackless trolley car, constructed in the shops of the Tientsin Tramway Company, was successfully tested on the broad street east of the northeast corner of the old walled city. In appear- ance and performance it was found pleasing and satisfactory. It is driven by a 70-horsepower electric traction motor which can operate at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. There are soft leather-covered seats for 26 passengers and standing room for 20 persons. Construction cost is said to be about one half that of an imported car.
