Most space was devoted to the more re- cently announced project, the Volga-Don Canal, with its 160,000-kilowatt Tsimlyansk GES The Volga-Don Canal, to go into operation in the spring of 1952, is much more advanced than the other construction proj- ects. A basic structure 20 meters high and nearly a half kilometer long has been erected to contain the concrete work in constructing the dam of the Tsim- lyansk GES. Traveling cranes are mounted on top of this structure to speed up concrete laying and 50 kilometers of railroad track have been laid in the con- struction area to facilitate getting the construction materials to the working areas0(1) Nearly 70 percent of the inhabitants of the old population centers in the Tsimlyansk Rayon have already moved to new places. One hundred and twenty homes have been occupied in the new city of Tsimlyansk, where a railroad station and river port will be built during 1951. Over 20 schools, clubs, and other public buildings have been built in this area during 1950.(2) The first icebreaker, the Volga, has been built for the Volga-Don Canal by the Gor'kiy "Krasnoye Sormovo" Plant and is now undergoing tests. A second icebreaker, the Don, will be completed soon.(3) Machinery, equipment, and construction materials continued to arrive at the construction sites of other hydroelectric and canal projects in quantity. The following plants supplying materials for these projects have been mentioned in the Soviet press during the period from 26 November 1950 to 3 February 1951.
