PROMOTE MANUFACTURE OF PENICILLIN, STEELON, INSECTICIDES
PENICILLIN MANUFACTURED IN TARCHOMIN -?- Frankfurt/Main, Wiadomosci Polskie,
5 Nov 50
The Spiess factory, in Tarchomin to make vinegar, paste, and lubricants,
is now the site of a new modern penicillin plant. While the factory was be-
ing equipped, laboratories experimented in preparation for the production of
penicillin.
Jerzy Lietke, former employee of the Associated Enterprises of the Phar-
maceutical Industry, is manager of the penicillin factory. He received the
State Scientific Award for helping to activate this first Polish penicillin
factory. Contrary to misgivings about Poland's ability to produce penicillin,
the factory was able to fulfill its yearly plan within 6 months. Its propor-
tionate spoilage is considerably smaller than that of Canadian factories.
Under the Six-Year Plan, the factory will. be expanded into a large, in-
dependent pharraceutical combine. The number of employees will be trip-'ed,
and production will increase 13 fold. While the production increase index for
all industry is 150 percent in the Six-Year Plan, the index for the rapidly
expanding pharmaceutical industry will be 1,300 percent. With ideal working
conaitions for employees, billions of penicillin units are now being manufac-
tured.
STEELON PRODUCTION TO EXPAND -- Frankfurt/Main, Wiadomosci Polskie, 22 Oct 50
The Six-Year Plan provides for a great expansion of synthetic fiber pro-
duction -- steelon, acetate and glass fibers, and plastics.
Tar, obtained by distillation of coal, a raw material most abundant in Po-
land, is the basic raw material for steelon production. To date. the limited
output of steelon has been used to costs; underwear, hose, and for industrial
purposes. A blend of ateelon and wool or steelon and cotton is exceptionally
d,_-Able

'Steelon, similar to nylon produced in America and the western coun-
tries, is in production at the experimental laboratory in Jelenia Gora.
It has much higher tensile strength than nylon and is 3 to 5 times stronger
than cotton, linen, or hemp.
With activation of a large plant in 1951, production of steelon will
be greatly expanded in the Six-Year Plan.
PRODUCTION OF INSECTICIDES IN POLAND -- Dusseldorf, Chemische Industrie,
Aug 50
Since 1946 particular attention has been devoted to the problem of
protection of crops in Poland, Experimental stations have been established,
and the chemical industry has been encouraged to increase production of plant
protective agents and insecticides. According to Przemysl Chemiczny, the ar-
senical agents being produced in the Slask metallurgical p ants are being used
