SOVIET MILITARY COMMUNICATIONS
ACTIVITIES EXPAND IN BULGARIA
Belgrade, 8 December -- According to an absolutely reliable source, a
Soviet transport recently arrived at the Bulgarian Black Sea port of Burgas
and discharged an infantry battalion of 1,200 men.
The question is being asked whether these are a new contingent of Soviet
specialists and instructors, thousands of whom are already in Bulgaria, or
whether they are advance units of large combat forces, expected by many to be
sent to Bulgaria because of the world situation.
At the same time, it was learned that in the mid-November'approximately
80 Soviet railroad and highway construction specialists arrived in Sofia to
expand the strategically important communication routes particularly in southern
and eastern Bulgaria. At present, extensive work is.being supervised by these
experts in the southeast between the Maritsa River and the Turko-Greek border.
The work center is the city of Ihaskovo the last important station before the
Turkish border on the Sofia-Istanbul railroad line,
The roads running from IShaskovo eastward to the Turkish border and south-
ward across the Rhodope Mountains to the Greek border are being expanded and. the
bridges reinforced; a narrow-gauge railroad net is being laid radially-around
Itha, skovo, apparently to be used for the transportation of war materiel.
