The satisfactory performance of the filter has since proved that the criticisms were entirely unfounded. SAYS FIVE-YEAR PLAN TARGET WILL BE MET -- Moscow, Irasnyaya Zvezda, 25 Aug 50 Soviet Army men of the Baltic Military District recently heard a lecture on the progress in the automobile industry. Posters were ahowL illustrating the rise in production from 4,000 cars in 1929-1930 to 200,000 cars at the end of the Second Five-Year Plan. During 195.0, the speaker said, 500,000 vehicles. would roll off the assembly lines of Soviet plants. Phis is the official target figure for 1950 published in the Five-Year Plan_7 MOSCOW SERVICE FACILITIES INADEQUATE -- Moscow, Moskovskaya Pravda, 23 Aug 50 Moscow has very few service stations, and equipment at the existing stations is entirely inadequate. Neither the Ministry of Motor Transport RSFSR nor the RSFSR Automobile Servicing Trust has given sufficient attention to the development of service stations. LITHUANIA TO GET MODERN REPAIR PLANT -- Vil'nyus, Sovetskaya Litva, 24 Aug 50 The Ministry of State Farms Lithuanian SSR is building an automobile and tractor repair plant in the city of Radvilishkis. Shops for heat treatment, as- sembly, machining, and motor testing have.been laid out. The plant has received metal-cutting machine tools of the latest type from sister republics. Many of these tools have already been installed. The test stands have also received brand new equipment. Two conveyers are being set up in the motor shop. By the end of 1950 the motor shop will go into action. The plant will repair tractors and trucks for sovkhozes, kolkhozes, and MTS of the Lithuanian Republic. 14Ai s 6,000 AXLES FROM WASTE -- Yerevan, Kommunist, 25 Aug 50 By using what was formerly waste material from the manufacture of shafts for the ZIS-5 truck, the Yerevan Avtodetal' Plant has been able to make 6,000 GAZ-AA truck axles. These have been placed in stock. It includes engineers, de- signers, checkers, and Stakhanovite workers. It holds regular meetings devoted to improving the quality of products and eliminating rejects. The plant is already operating under the 1951 production schedule and has eliminated production losses. The measuring, metallographic, and chemical labora- tories are eqi ipped with precision instruments which make it poesible to ascertain rapidly the quality of heat and mechanical processing of products. ZIS CASTING SHOP LEADS AUTO INDUSTRY -- Mekhanizatsiya Trudoyemkikh i Tyazhelykh Rabat, No 9) Sep 50 One of the largest shops in the Moscow Automobile Plant imeni Stalin is that in which parts for automobiles, buses, and other vehicles are cast from grey iron. The range of parts cast includes many dozens of items, among them transmission and clutch housings, cylinder blocks, intake and exhaust manifolds, flywheels, brake drix , and elements of the ignition, compressor, and oil and water pumps. Most of the castings are for the engine and vary greatly in weight. For 'example, a piston ring weighs only 70 grams while a cylinder block weighs 160 kilograms. The high degree of mechanization, combined with the Stakhanovite methods em- ployed, have enabled this shop to achieve excellent production indexes. In October 1948: it received the Stakhanovite rating, which it holds to this day. In addition, it holds the plant's transferable red banner and has been named consistently the best of all casting shops under the Ministry of Automobile and Tractor Industry. Its achievements are 'all the more remarkable Because this shop had been one of the most backward in the plant as late as 1946. At present the conveyer belt is used in all the basic production sections in the shop, and the day and hour schee.ules have become a fixed rule. Mechanization was carried out at every step through the plant's own efforts. Forming machines and conveyers, four-way driers and other machines were installed for this purpose. This shop has produced many Stakhanovites whose fame has spread throughout the USSR. Goncharov, a molder, produces the record number of 900 molds per shift on the VF2 molding machine. Bykovskiy, a f^rming brigade leader, forms 405 bottoms per shift for ZIS -150 cylinder blocks. A coremaking brigade, headed by Kirilina, raised its productivity to a point where it was able to change over to a single shift instead of the former two. Golikova, a member of this brigade, can form 980 large-type cores cylinder block per shift. Lodovskaya and Zasorina can form ul, to 130 piston rings per shift, which is a record number. MECHANIZE PIPE BENDING AND RING GRINDING -- Minsk, Sovetskaya Belorussiya, 30 Aug 50 A worker of the Kharkov Tractor Plant, operating a new machine toci designed by fitter Khrushchiy, turned out 50,000 exhaust pipes in 2 months. This tool has completely mechanized the pipe-bending process. Instead of 40 minutes, a pipe now takes only 8 minutes to produce. A lathe operator at the same plant, Ivan Shilo, has designed a special-machine tool for grinding the external surfaces of tractor piston rings,?which hitherto was done by hand. This has increased labor productivity 8 to 10 times. The tool grinds as many rings in one hour as were formerly ground by the entire shop during a shift. -3- Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/09/27: CIA-RDP80-00809A000600370092-9
