TO PRODUCE 306,000 TONS OF CRUDE OIL IN 1950 -- Berlin Die Wirtschaft,

The Kucove petroleum field and the Patos field were made ready for petro-
leum production in 1946. and 1947 respectively, after raving been'destroyed
during the last wax. The 1947 production plan was fulfilled by only 90 per-
cent and the 1948 plan by only 84 percent because of Titoist sabotage.
The Albanian government invested 60 million lek for opening more petro-
leum fields in the middle of 1948. The money was spent chiefly for drilling
equipment imported from the People's Democracies and the USSR.
The government allocated 11 million lek for drilling wells, prospecting
for new oil fields, and safeguarding oil 'eserves. It invested 58 million lek
for increasing production of the existing petroleum fields. Pipe lines, 42
kilometers long, were la?.d between fields and petroleum depots.
A new refinery i_, Uj i Ftofte was near completion in the middle of 1950.
The government spent 7,900,000 lek for electric power needed by the petroleum
industry and for improvements in the refinery.
Construction of a heating 'plant and petroleum cracking plant, Trith a ca-
pacity of 150,000, tons per year, is scheduled for 1951 - 1952. The USSR will
supply the equipment.
Albanian crude oil production was 120,000 tons in 1938, 92,000 in 1946,.
160,000 in 1947, 191,000 in 1948, 237,000 in 1949, and .306,000 tons is planned
for 1950.
The asphalt installations at Kuc,ove, destroyed during the war, were recon-
structed and 9,600,000' Albanian francs were invested for securing new reserves
during the Two-Year Plan. New mine galleries, 13,000 meters long, are being
laid, and 3,100,000 lek is being invested in housing and recreation for petro-
leum and asphalt workers.

Asphalt production in Albania was 20,000 tons in 1938,?18,000 in 19,46,
21,000 in 1947, 28,000 in 1948, 29,000' in 1949, and 35,000 tons is planned for
1950.

The plan for petroleum and coal production in Albania in 1948 was not
fulfilled because of sabotage by Yugoslav specialists working in Albania as
well as by Yugoslav supply agencies. Nevertheless, petroleum production in
1948 was 109.7 percent as compared with 1938 and 119.7 percent as compared
with 1947. Coal production was 573.9 percent and 200.9 percent respectively.
On 2 June 1949, the People's Kuvend established a Two-Year Plan for de-
velopment of the economy, according to which by the end of 1950 petroleum pro-
duction is scheduled to be 159 percent and coal production 255 percent as com-
pared to the 1948 production.
There were 13 power plants in Albania, which produced 3 million kilowatt-
hours per year in 1938.
Albanian power plants produced 9,200,000 kilowatt-hours per year between
1946 and 1947.
Between 1947 and 1948, 67,320,000 lek were spent for the new "Selite"
Power Plant, which is still under construction. The power plants at Biliste
and Erseke were completed at the beginning of 1950.

According to newspaper reports, Albania is to have a petroleum refinery.
The project is expected to be completed before the end of 1950.
